Ocean literacy is not only about increasing awareness on the state of the ocean, but it is about providing tools and approaches to transform ocean knowledge into actions to promote ocean sustainability. Ocean Literacy as concept and approach is radically evolving from being a tool to be applied in formal education and training contexts to a tool and an approach for society as a whole, aimed at triggering actions towards ocean sustainability. The UN General Assembly declared 2021-2030 the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, and the IOC of UNESCO has been tasked to coordinate its preparatory phase. In this context, Ocean Literacy is expected to play an important role. 2. Purpose of the Assignment The purpose of this assignment is to define a package for the development of online courses on ocean literacy for different stakeholders. 3. Duties/Tasks and Expected Output: To support the IOC secretariat in the development online courses on ocean literacy for different stakeholders, and in particular for government officials, for educators, and for media representatives: • Prepare an Analysis of similar initiatives • Develop of the courses structures, objectives, learning outcomes, and materials; • Develop of the courses and contribute to identify potential attendees; • Evaluate the courses 4. Timetable and Deliverables This is a consultant contract for 5 months. The appointment is non-career and does not carry any expectancy of renewal or conversion to another contract. Medical health care is not provided. Deliverables Analysis of similar initiatives: Deadline 31 August 2020 Courses structure: Deadline 30 September 2020 Courses content : Deadline 31 October 2020 Courses delivery and evaluation: Deadline 15 December 2020 SUPERVISORY ARRANGEMENTS Supervisory arrangements The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist in charge of Ocean Literacy. LANGUAGES Languages Fluency in English is required as well as excellent writing skills. In addition, knowledge of other UN languages will be a strong asset. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS PhD or Master Degree or BSc in ocean science or related subjects. WORK EXPERIENCE 5 to 10 years of relevant experience at the international level in the development, implementation of ocean literacy projects and programmes, and in particular in the development of training and courses. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES Familiarity with the work and general functioning of international organizations and/or the UN system, including the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Agenda, and other relevant global and regional ocean governance frameworks; Good understanding of ocean sciences and its applications to ocean education and Capacity Development. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Experience in online trainings would be considered as an asset.
