The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Communication comprises Web Editorial, Social Media News and Campaigns, Digital Governance and Platforms teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, the Digital Strategy Section draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability. Web stories, blog posts, photo essays, Facebook posts, Twitter campaigns, and videos for distribution via UNICEF.org, UNICEF Connect, YouTube, news media and other outlets and platforms are all a part of our digital storytelling. Part of the Digital Platforms and Governance Team, our Creative Team tackles the front-end Design for the global unicef.org ecosystem of websites by creating engaging user experiences, intuitive user interfaces and compelling editorial layouts that amplify UNICEF’s work for every child. The Designer will help UNICEF engage global audiences by designing editorial graphics, layouts, and stories for the UNICEF.org ecosystem of websites; by supporting in the enhancement the front-end user interfaces and user experiences for UNICEF.org Platform (our CMS); and supporting our communication teams across the world to fully comprehend and utilize the creative potential of the platform. The Digital Strategy Section is also responsible for the build, management and maintenance of global website properties, as well as providing support to Country and Regional (field) Offices to maximize their use of global web platforms in their communications activities. This role is instrumental in ensuring our large and globally distributed user base has access to web platforms, and is supported to use these platforms to publish high quality content that is critical to their communications work. Part of the Digital Platforms and Governance Team, our Creative Team tackles the front-end design for the global unicef.org ecosystem of websites by creating engaging user experiences, intuitive user interfaces and compelling editorial layouts that amplify UNICEF's work for every child. How can you make a difference? The Designer will help UNICEF engage global audiences by designing editorial graphics, layouts, and stories for the UNICEF.org ecosystem of websites; by supporting in the enhancement the front-end user interfaces and user experiences for UNICEF.org Platform (our CMS); and supporting our communication teams across the world to fully comprehend and utilize the creative potential of the platform. Expected results: (measurable results) The UNICEF.org platform is a custom Drupal component-based Content Management System (CMS). The front-end design is guided exclusively by a comprehensive design system -- our Design Model. All technical implementation is based this guidance and our editors, globally, all use the same components and templates to build out their sites and pages. The Designer will:
  •  Create compelling, professional, streamlined page layouts, sections, and sites using the UNICEF.org platform and the tools and features built in.

  • Design, illustrate, source, and customize supporting editorial graphics, including (but not limited to) maps, icons, and infographics.

  • Research, test, and demonstrate recommendations for feature and front-end design enhancements and inputs to the platform road-map.

  • Design and test new front-end features and enhancements according to the platform road-map, and merge these updates into the Design Model.

  • Assure the accurate technical implementation of front-end design enhancements including the handover and user acceptance testing for front-end development.

  • Document, assist, and advocate for proper use of front-end design features.

Description of the assignment  The Creative Team plays a role in a variety of projects across the Digital Strategy Section (DSS), Division of Communication (DOC), and collaborates with the Division of Information and Communication Technology (ITCD), and other Divisions, and Regional and Country offices. Our design work ranges from initial project conception and ideation, through strategy, prioritization, visual design, to final delivery and implementation. The Designer inputs at each stage. The front-end design of the UNICEF.org platform is based on a comprehensive design system -- our Design Model. The Design Model is a robust atomic, symbol based design system that governs the styles of all front-end implementations of UNICEF's Drupal component-based CMS. The master Design Model file is formatted in Sketch, with handover and specifications in various platforms such as InVision. Our editors, globally, all use the same Design Model components to build their sites, pages and campaigns. The Creative Team, therefore, inherently supports global editorial efforts by providing and enhancing the design of the platform and its features, and best enabling our editors create and publish their content. The Designer will create front-end editorial design and layouts published on the global platform. This work will support global Digital Strategy Section (DSS) teams to:
  • Provide guidance and support for page layouts and navigation structures.

  • Deliver (and/or Coordination of) editorial-focused design assets such as infographics, layouts, iconography, simple animations, and/or other supporting assets.

  • Provide artistic guidance, and support to other members of the creative team.

  • Provide QA and feedback during site/page reviews and audits.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to brainstorm new features and functionalities and provide feedback for the ongoing product roadmap.

  • Collaborate with design teams across the organization to assure brand compliance and implementation of the global brand strategy.

The Designer will assist in front-end design training and support for the platform's users by collaborating with Governance, Training and Support teams to:
  • Provide proper documentation and guidance for the training and use of the design system (best practices).

  • Providing intermediate support for questions regarding design functionality.

  • Provide QA and feedback during site/page reviews and audits.

The Creative Team manages and maintains the master Design Model file, leading the front-end design enhancements, and the initial designs of new features and templates. The Designer will collaborate on and assist to deliver new front-end designs identified in the Platform Roadmap (including bug fixes, feature enhancements, and new features) for the ongoing improvement of the platform. They will collaborate across teams to:
  • Gather project requirements, estimate deliverables, and prioritize and schedule tasks.

  • Prioritize, coordinate and deliver design deliverables for feature enhancements.

  • Identify, create, and map User Experiences through user journeys, user flows, site maps and wireframes.

  • Support Capacity Building efforts by providing design documentation, best-practices, and guidance for users of UNICEF's Digital Platform.

  • Utilize Digital Intelligence efforts to improve and iterate on the User Experience and User Interface of the ecosystem to inform and prioritize design related enhancements.

  • Conduct user testing and iterate based on findings, including from internal and external users, across devices and browsers, across UNICEF's accessibility standards, and aligned with UNICEF's global brand strategy.

  • Prepare, or coordinate the preparation of, final deliverable design files and specifications for handoff to ICTD development team, working closely with the front-end developers to visual QA the technical implementation (Sketch, InVision).

  • Provide artistic direction, guidance, and support to other members of the creative team.

In many scenarios, consultant is expected to support and produce design assets in all UNICEF digital supported languages (English, Arabic, French, Spanish, Chinese), although fluency is not expected. To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have¦ A professional and educational background or related to design (graphic, web, product, user experience) including:
  • An advanced university degree in design (graphic, web, product, user experience) or related fields.
    • An advanced but unrelated University Degree combined with 1 additional years of professional experience in a related fields may also be accepted.


  • 2 Years or more of relevant professional experience.

  • A strong, digital portfolio demonstrating user experience and user interface design.

  • Working knowledge of Data Visualization and implementing Infographics.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

The ability to use and work with product design tools, including:
  • Expert knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop)

  • Expert knowledge in Sketch, especially knowledge of an atomic design based system and working with comprehensive library of symbols.

  • Fundamental understanding of CSS, and ability to deliver designs that are feasible in CSS.

  • Strong documentation and presentation skills, especially when it comes to handover for technical implementation.

  • Experience using InVision for presentation, prototyping, testing, and technical handovers. Experience in other prototyping tools is considered an asset.

  • Experience working with Infogram (or similar tools such as Tableau) for creating embeddable and interactive graphics.

  • Working knowledge of Drupal 8, or other component based enterprise content Management Systems.

  • Working knowledge of W3A Accessibility Standards.

The ability to work in a global, international environment, including:
  • Experience working on multilingual sites. Previous work in RTL languages is considered a strong asset.

  • Experience working in developing countries and/or familiarity with emergencies is considered an asset.

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
