UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) is a partnership between the United Nations and the civil society, which supports women led and women’s rights organizations working to build peace and provide humanitarian response throughout the world. Since the end of 2016, the WPHF has been supporting over 55 civil society organizations and is present in 7 countries or group of countries.

UN Women hosts the Secretariat of the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund. The WPHF Secretariat provides support to the Funding Board, mobilizes resources from Governments, companies, foundations and individual, provides day to day support to Country Offices implementing WPHF programmes, ensures timely and quality monitoring and reporting. The Secretariat’s mandate is also to strengthen the general public as well as stakeholders’ knowledge of and engagement with women, peace and security and humanitarian issues through proper internal and external communications, advocacy and outreach. Finally, the Secretariat provides knowledge management services for the WPHF, and has been mandated to establish a Community of Practice (CoP) for WPHF partners and grantees.

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Secretariat of the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund – Peace and Security and humanitarian section - the Communications, Advocacy & Knowledge Management Specialist will lead the development and implementation of communication and outreach strategies and plans for the WPHF, manage the roll-out of the WPHF Community of Practice, and work to build participation and sharing among CoP members. The Specialist will lead the technical communication, advocacy and knowledge management support of work of the broader WPHF Secretariat including, advocacy, capacity building and strategic partnerships, and learning and knowledge production and management

Duties and Responsibilities

Lead the development and implementation of communication and outreach strategies and plans, to support the objectives of the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF):

  • Develop and implement communication and outreach/advocacy strategies, including media strategies;

  • Elaborate and roll-out strategy on communications on the new WPHF rapid response window on women’s participation in peace processes;

  • Ensure communication, advocacy and outreach strategies are integrated into proposals for project/programmes and other initiatives;

  • Lead the WPHF social media strategy;

  • Manage WPHF’s website;

  • Coordinate WPHF campaigns and special events as needed;

  • Provide capacity to Country Offices managing WPHF allocations on communication and outreach activities;

  • Manage media relations for the WPHF.

Manage the Community of Practice (CoP) of the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF-C):

  • Manage the WPHF-C on a daily basis by creating, collecting and uploading content;

  • Liaise with pro bono partner company on needs assessment and ongoing monitoring and evaluation of CoP development, roll-out and usage;

  • Establish guidelines and criteria for key strategic partners, including Centres of Excellence;

  • Map skills and expertise across CoP participants, including through surveys and other methods for information capture and analysis;

  • Develop and populate CoP with needs-based and responsive interactive content;

  • Research and implement multi-lingual capacity-building opportunities for CoP members;

  • Facilitate learning, knowledge sharing and peer-to-peer exchange through multi-channel media;

  • Identify opportunities for face-to-face engagement in conjunction with other key events;

  • Track user participation and implement responsive solutions to build engagement and communication;

  • Liaise with CoP leads within UN Women’s Policy Division and other UN partners to ensure internal knowledge and good practice exchange and sharing.

Lead the design and dissemination of advocacy materials for the WPHF:

  • Develop and produce communication and advocacy instruments and materials, including briefing materials, press releases, and articles and coordinate its dissemination through effective channels;

  • Identify and launch information opportunities, activities, approaches and platforms and partners;

  • Lead the engagement and supervision of video producers and other communication specialists to produce audio/ visual material on WPHF’s work;

  • Develop brochures, factsheets, stories from the field to inform media and general public at the regional level.

Build and maintain partnerships and maintain relations with partners:

  • Identify and develop new communication partnerships and alliances to enhance visibility; manage and nurture existing partnerships;

  • Liaise with advocacy partners and undertake outreach to civil society organizations, governments, and other groups to ensure that newsworthy information reaches the public;

  • Guide and collaborate closely with communication colleagues in other offices to ensure consistency with corporate policies, messaging and initiatives.

Provide other support as requested by the supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s degree in political science, international relations, journalism gender studies, management, editing and production, or related field is required;

  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience in human rights, women’s rights, or related field;

  • Experience in communications, including social media;

  • Experience in knowledge exchange and learning across a variety of modalities is an asset;

  • Previous experience with the UN is a plus.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required;

  • Knowledge of another UN official working language is an asset.
