Organizational Setting The position will be based at FAO office KP. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative; is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural fisheries and forestry sectors and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner Reporting Lines The incumbent will work under the general supervision of the FAO Representative and direct supervision of the Project Lead and International Project Coordinator, in close collaboration of Assistant FAO Representative-Programme (AFAOR), Resilience Programme Officer in Pakistan and close consultation with Technical Staff. Technical Focus The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring high quality of outputs on all matters related to the project. Tasks and responsibilities
  • The Climate Smart Agriculture Specialist will liaise with and feed relevant and succinct information to the Project Development section at Program Section Islamabad;

  • Design and implement project component for Climate Change adaptation, mitigation through climate smart and conservation agriculture;

  • Provide technical advice on sustainable agriculture to guarantee production efficiency, climate adaptation and mitigation through effective climate smart, climate resilient and conservation agriculture;

  • CSAS will technically assess the applicability of prevailing climate vulnerability assessments and disaster risk management measures for linking it with development of agribusiness value chains of the selected commodities.

  • Provide his technical inputs in related policy, legal and institutional framework to support climate smart and conservation agriculture in FAO program;

  • Will provide his technical feedback in accessing and introducing climate resilient crop varieties, practices and systems for desired impacts;

  • Supervise introduction, demonstration of resilient crops and plants species in collaboration with government institutions;

  • Develop IEC (Information, Education and Communication) materials on climate smart and conservation agriculture in consultation with relevant governmental and non-governmental bodies/institutions/organizations;

  • Technically lead the activities of CSA and CA demonstration sites to showcase climate resilient Agricultural Practices and technologies and ensuring the Capacity Development of communities and stakeholders on improved/recommended climate smart and conservation agriculture practices;

  • Provide Technical Support in conducting baseline assessment of policy, legal/regulatory and institutional frameworks related to climate smart and conservation agriculture, integrated level natural Resource Management related project activities;

  • Be responsible for review, analyse existing climate smart and conservation agriculture technologies and practices, and suggest recommendations to promote them through project interventions in order to reduce negative environmental impacts;

  • Conduct capacity needs assessment (technical, financial, equipment, knowledge) associated with incorporation of new climate smart and conservation agriculture practices and technologies;

  • Devise capacity development strategy/framework that addresses knowledge gaps, training and technical needs to support adoption of CSA and Ca technologies and practices;

  • Identify and engage government and nongovernmental stakeholders in CSA and CA interventions of program and ensure their active engagement in the activities for better adoption and replication;

  • Technically backstop INRM planning and ensuring inclusion of CS and CA in INRM plans implementation;

  • Any other assignment delegated by the supervisor(s);

  • Advanced university degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agribusiness and Plant/Crop Sciences;

  • Expertise in smallholder production systems particularly in arid and semi-arid agro ecological regions of the country;

  • Minimum 5 years’ progressive experience within the sector including market aspects, preferably with private sector;

  • Working knowledge of English. Good knowledge of Urdu and Pashto;
