In this role, your primary responsibility is to contribute to the goals of the Carbon Management team, including: 1. Working with senior researchers to advance the field of carbon management by determining policy, funding, and cost-reduction opportunities to deploy new technologies and overcome technological barriers 2. Support collaborations with corporate stakeholders of an upcoming “Corporate Carbon Removal Hub,” which will advance efforts by major US corporations to reach net-zero or net-negative carbon emissions goals. 3. Develop knowledge products and outreach and communication to the Hill and peer organizations, with the objectives of increasing policymaker understanding of CDR and coalescence around key policy needs to advance it. 4. Mobilizing peer organizations and others around research findings and policy options. 5. Conveying the opportunity for technological innovation in this area in ways that facilitate increased R&D investment.
Research and Analysis (70% effort)
- Lead and support development of knowledge products such as working papers, blogs, and external communication materials for the Carbon Management team. This includes leading or supporting along the entire process from Desk Research to external consultations and Data Analysis, internal and external review, production and publication in Coordination with the rest of the team, reviewers, and Core Comms
- Review peer publications (working papers, reports) as needed. External Engagement and Communications (30% effort) • Present research findings publicly, including speaking at events both internally at WRI and for external audiences and preparing relevant materials.
- Conduct consultations with external experts, as part of research process for working papers and other knowledge products. • Liaise and coordinate with external consultants to author knowledge products
- Collaborate with external organizations on content and review of working papers and other knowledge projects.
- Participate in briefings and meetings on Hill to provide background information on carbon removal and/or present recent research findings.
- Prepare outreach and communications materials with communications manager and core communications team, including 2-pagers, charts, infographics, videos, etc.
- Liaise with funder(s) as necessary to communicate updates to work and propose new work.
- Respond to external inquiries on knowledge products.
- Build and maintain relationship with WRI’s ocean and global climate teams.
- Excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills.
- Master’s degree, preferably in Environmental Policy, Natural Sciences, Sustainability Science, International Relations, Economics or related or with substantial professional work to demonstrate the relevance of that experience.
- Subject matter expertise on carbon removal approaches, including both natural and technological; familiarity with CCS technology a plus.
- Detail-oriented and highly organized with at least 3-5 years of hands-on experience, ideally within an international nonprofit organization.
- Strong computer skills and experience in Microsoft suite, Database Management, cloud- and web-based communications. Advanced Excel skills required.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure with tight deadlines. Flexible and capable of working with minimal direction and supervision.

Currently there is still a large gap between our current emissions trajectory and what is laid out in the Paris Agreement. Closing this gap will require achieving net-zero emissions in the United States (and globally) by mid-century, which, in turn, will require continued efforts to deeply decarbonize the economy as well as carbon removal to directly remove carbon from the atmosphere that is left unabated at that point. WRI’s Carbon Management Team is an interdisciplinary and cross-programmatic team that works to scale up U.S. investment in carbon removal—including terrestrial carbon capture (e.g., tree restoration and agricultural soil carbon management), technological carbon removal (e.g., direct air capture and carbon mineralization), and emerging ocean-based carbon removal approaches.
The team is actively supporting policy development and stakeholder engagement efforts at the federal level to unlock investment in carbon removal at the billion-dollar scale.
