ITU is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies, with the mission to connect the world. To achieve this, ITU manages the radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits at the international level, works to improve communication infrastructure in the developing world, and establishes global standards that foster seamless interconnection of a vast range of communication systems. ITU also organizes global Telecom events bringing together the most influential representatives of government and the private sector to exchange ideas and knowledge for the benefit of all.   INTERNSHIP: 15INTERNSHIPS-2020/BDT-DDR Organ: The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is responsible for the organization and coordination of the work of the Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) of the Union which deals mainly with ICT-focused development policies, strategies and programmes, as well as technical cooperation activities, to promote digital inclusion and drive digital transformation at community, country and regional levels. To effectively and efficiently serve the needs of ITU members, BDT is organized into four functional areas:
  • Office of the Deputy to the Director and Field Operations Coordination Department

  • Partnerships for Digital Development Department

  • Digital Networks & Society Department

  • Digital Knowledge Hub Department

Organization Unit: The office of the Deputy to the Director and Field Operations Coordination Department is responsible for advising and supporting the Director on the direction and management of the Bureau. It is also responsible for leading all matters related to personnel, strategic, financial and operational planning and reporting processes. The department oversees the work of the Regional Offices, ensuring proper delegation of authority and accountability of the Regional Offices. This department coordinates the holding of BDT conferences and events, monitors the implementation of decisions emanating from the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC), the Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG) or Council, and cooperates closely with the other Sectors of the Union and the General Secretariat on matters of relevance to BDT and the overall work of the Union. BDT Regional Directors report to this department.Main Tasks and Responsibilities of the InternshipDeveloping digital skills and promoting inclusive use of ICT is a priority for countries in the Asia-Pacific Region. ICTs play a key role in enabling digital transformation to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. ITU is responsible for ensuring inclusive, equal access and use of ICTs for all, through development of policies and raising awareness through trainings, (https://www.itu.int/en/ITU-D/Digital-Inclusion/Pages/default.aspx) with UN agencies, countries and partners to develop relevant programmes for women and girls, youth, children, people with disabilities and indigenous people and communities. Key global projects conducted by ITU include Girls in ICT day, EQUALS and GIGA. These activities have cross-cutting features. They require close collaboration between stakeholders from within and outside the sector, which requires the development of innovative approaches and solutions. The intern will focus on the following areas:
  • Participate in the development of profiles on the use of ICTs by gender, age and disability for different countries in Asia and the Pacific;

  • Support in research and development of a programme that has an impact on the target group in Asia and the Pacific member countries, sub-region and the entire region as a whole;

  • Support the implementation of regional projects on e-inclusion such as, but not limited to, Girls in ICT day, EQUALS and GIGA;

  • Support the development of concept notes and projects related to Digital Inclusion;

Competencies
  • Good working knowledge of the role of ICTs in other sectors (in particular training and digital services);

  • Excellent knowledge of MS-Word, MS-Excel and MS-PowerPoint;

  • Excellent research skills and very good knowledge of global trends in this area of work;

  • Ability to think analytically and problem solve;

  • Good knowledge of video conferencing and collaborative tools;

  • Very good oral and written communication skills;

  • Social Media savvy;

  • Practical experience in organizing and managing events would be an advantage.

Qualifications required Education: Graduate Student or Ph.D. (candidate) in areas such as economics, social sciences, computer sciences, information technology or any other relevant field. Experience: No work experience required.
