Job Overview:
The UNEP NiMERP Project Coordinator and MARS Engagement Support position is designed to facilitate the on-the-ground execution of the Nigeria Methane Emissions Reduction Pilot Programme (NiMERP). The role involves maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in Nigeria to support NiMERP and other priorities of the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO). The coordinator will also provide support for the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) engagement in Nigeria and other priority countries in the region. The duties and responsibilities of the UNEP NiMERP Project Coordinator include facilitating the execution of the NiMERP, which aims to assess methane emissions across various sectors in Nigeria, including agriculture, waste, and oil and gas. The coordinator will be responsible for building local capacity for methane measurement and mitigation, delivering a scientific study to establish an empirical methane baseline, and raising awareness among academics, stakeholders, and relevant ministries regarding methane emissions and mitigation opportunities. Additionally, the coordinator will manage relationships with government agencies, international organizations, and technical partners, ensuring effective communication and collaboration. The role requires strong coordination and organizational skills to handle multiple concurrent workstreams and competing priorities, as well as experience in managing scientific projects and engaging with climate and development stakeholders.

Experience interacting with government agencies in Nigeria and managing scientific projects is essential. Familiarity with greenhouse gas and methane emissions in at least one sector (energy, agriculture, waste) is also required. Strong coordination and organizational skills are necessary, along with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and priorities effectively.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or equivalent in fields related to environmental policy, management, political science, environmental studies, sustainability, or climate policy. This advanced education is crucial for understanding the complexities of environmental issues and the necessary strategies for addressing them effectively.

This experience should be relevant to energy, climate change, sustainable development, and support for environment or development projects, particularly in the context of developing countries. Candidates should have experience interacting with government agencies in Nigeria and managing scientific projects, as well as working with climate and development stakeholders, international organizations, and technical partners.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNEP's IMEO. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset and may enhance communication with diverse stakeholders.
