Job Overview:
The Protection Assistant – Monitoring will play a crucial role in implementing protection monitoring activities in selected Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) sites and host communities in Mai Tsebri and Dimma, Ethiopia. Reporting to the Protection Team Leader and under the technical supervision of the Protection Officer, the assistant will be responsible for planning and conducting protection monitoring visits, collecting data, and identifying individuals at risk. The role requires a proactive approach to engage with communities, gather information on protection trends, and provide direct assistance to those in need. The assistant will also contribute to the development of monitoring tools and participate in training sessions to enhance their skills in protection information management. This position is vital for ensuring that the protection needs of vulnerable populations are addressed effectively and that timely reports on protection trends are generated to inform programmatic responses.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The main duties and responsibilities of the Protection Assistant – Monitoring include conducting protection monitoring in assigned areas, contributing to the development and review of monitoring tools, identifying protection trends and needs through interviews and discussions, and utilizing data collection systems for effective data management. The assistant will be responsible for identifying individuals at risk, providing information, and referring them for specialized assistance. Regular monitoring of beneficiaries’ access to services and the effectiveness of referral services is essential, as well as conducting community awareness-raising activities. The assistant will maintain relationships with stakeholders to gather information on displacements and support safe referrals. Adherence to ethical data collection protocols and proper documentation of activities is required, along with participation in relevant training and assessments.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of one year’s experience in a relevant entry to mid-level position, particularly in humanitarian response and refugee/IDP protection. Experience in conducting protection monitoring or assessments using online data collection tools is essential. Strong data collection, analysis, and reporting skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Candidates should demonstrate integrity, a strong work ethic, and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, is necessary, and familiarity with data collection tools like Kobo is desirable.

Educational Background:
A university degree or diploma in social sciences, law, social work, international development, or a related field from a recognized institution is required for this position. Relevant certifications or licenses that enhance the candidate's qualifications may also be beneficial.

Experience:
The position requires at least one year of experience in a humanitarian context, specifically in roles related to protection monitoring or assessments. Candidates should have experience working with displaced or conflict-affected populations and demonstrate strong planning and organizational skills. The ability to analyze data and report findings effectively is crucial for success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in English, Amharic, and Tigrigna is mandatory, with excellent skills in speaking, reading, and writing in these languages. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but the primary requirement is strong communication skills in the specified languages.
