Job Overview: The Vehicle Technician position is a temporary role based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where the incumbent will provide essential support to the UN's transport operations. The technician will be responsible for servicing and repairing UN-owned vehicles, ensuring compliance with manufacturer standards and safety procedures. This role requires a proactive approach to vehicle maintenance, including conducting inspections, diagnosing faults, and producing detailed reports on servicing and repairs. The technician will also assist in identifying necessary parts and may be involved in training other mechanics. The position demands a high level of professionalism and technical expertise in vehicle management operations, as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a team to achieve organizational goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Vehicle Technician will perform a variety of duties, including but not limited to: servicing and repairing vehicles according to manufacturer standards; ensuring adherence to safety procedures during repairs; conducting vehicle inspections; producing documentation for all servicing and repairs; diagnosing and rectifying faults; assisting in parts identification; performing repairs on various vehicle systems including electrical, air-conditioning, suspension, braking, and hydraulic systems; using diagnostic tools to identify vehicle faults; conducting road tests and quality assurance checks; providing vehicle recovery services; monitoring the quality of repair work done by contractors; training colleagues in equipment maintenance; and reporting on maintenance programs and repair statuses to team leaders. The technician will also be expected to perform any other tasks as assigned by the supervisor or head of the unit/section.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A valid driver's license for 'C' category is required, and licenses for light and heavy vehicles (categories D and E) are desirable. Additionally, a technical or vocational certificate as a Motor Vehicle Technician (National Certificate or equivalent) is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and technical expertise in vehicle management operations, as well as the ability to follow safety procedures and maintain high standards of work.
Educational Background: The educational requirement for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to have a technical or vocational certificate in motor vehicle technology, which would enhance their qualifications for the role. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of vehicle maintenance and repair.
Experience: A minimum of five years of professional experience in transport operations management is required. Candidates should have experience in using spare parts catalogs and placing orders for spare parts. Experience as an auto mechanic is also desirable, along with knowledge of safe workshop equipment operation. Experience working in international organizations will be considered an asset, as it demonstrates familiarity with the operational standards and practices of such environments.
Languages: The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this position, proficiency in both languages is required, with a minimum UN Level II for reading, writing, listening, and speaking in both languages. This bilingual requirement ensures effective communication within the diverse UN environment.
