Job Overview:
The Senior Military Expert position is critical for providing strategic military and security advice to the Special Envoy and senior mission leadership. The role involves delivering qualitative assessments and options papers on military and security developments to support mediation efforts. The expert will be responsible for producing analytical reports, scenario development, and risk analysis to inform strategic decision-making. This position requires a deep understanding of military operations and the geopolitical landscape, particularly in relation to the ongoing conflict in Yemen. The expert will also engage with various stakeholders to provide technical advice and support ceasefire planning and implementation efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Development of new approaches in the security track, including producing briefing notes and advisory papers for the Special Envoy.
  • Delivering analytical reports and assessments on military and security developments.
  • Developing military and security scenario papers and risk assessments.
  • Producing technical assessments and briefing materials for the Military Coordination Committee.
  • Engaging with senior Yemeni and Regional stakeholders to inform security-track consultations.
  • Delivering technical advice on military aspects of ceasefire planning and related measures.
  • Supporting the Head of the Security Arrangements team with recommendations and analysis.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in political science, international relations, security, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A minimum of fifteen years of progressively responsible professional experience in relevant fields such as political affairs, defense, or conflict resolution is required. Experience at battalion command level or above, as well as in a senior military advisory capacity, is essential. Familiarity with the conflict in Yemen and established relationships with military officials in the Gulf region are desirable.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, security studies, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree may be accepted with additional qualifying experience.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, international relations, defense, security, conflict resolution, or related fields. Relevant experience should include service at battalion command level or higher, and experience as a senior military adviser or in a comparable strategic military advisory role is necessary. Experience related to the conflict in Yemen is considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable, while proficiency in French is also beneficial as it is another working language of the UN Secretariat.
