Job Overview:
The Protection Officer plays a crucial role in the field-level coordination and implementation of DRC's protection initiatives, particularly focusing on return and reintegration processes for migrants and returnees in Bosaso and other relevant locations in Puntland. This position is integral to ensuring that protection-sensitive activities are delivered effectively and that local partners are supported in their efforts to assist vulnerable populations. The officer will be responsible for overseeing various aspects of protection services, including vulnerability screening, case management, and referrals, while also ensuring that the delivery of services is aligned with DRC's standard operating procedures (SOPs) and best practices. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying protection risks and implementing appropriate responses, as well as fostering collaboration with local stakeholders to enhance the overall effectiveness of protection interventions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Protection Officer's duties encompass a wide range of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of migrants and returnees. Key responsibilities include coordinating vulnerability screenings and protection risk assessments, providing technical guidance to DRC caseworkers, and ensuring that case management and referral processes are conducted in a safe and rights-based manner. The officer will also facilitate access to various support services, including mental health and psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">psychosocial support (MHPSS), legal aid, and livelihood opportunities. Additionally, the officer will engage in protection monitoring activities, ensuring that urgent protection risks are addressed promptly and that referral systems are functioning effectively. The role involves maintaining accurate documentation, monitoring compliance with DRC policies, and contributing to the overall improvement of protection services through evidence-based advocacy and reporting.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the Protection Officer position, candidates must possess a minimum of three years of relevant experience in protection work within humanitarian, displacement, or mixed-migration contexts. A bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Human Rights, International Development, Peace and Conflict Studies, or a closely related field is required. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of case management, protection monitoring, and the provision of protection-sensitive assistance. Relevant training in protection, case management, and mixed migration is considered an asset. Experience working collaboratively with local partners and government authorities, as well as linking protection efforts with economic recovery initiatives, is highly desirable. Strong analytical, reporting, communication, and data protection skills are essential for success in this role.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Human Rights, International Development, Peace and Conflict Studies, or a closely related discipline. This educational background provides the necessary theoretical foundation and practical skills required for effective engagement in protection work and case management within humanitarian settings.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant experience in protection roles, particularly in humanitarian or mixed-migration settings. Experience in return and reintegration processes is strongly preferred, as it directly relates to the responsibilities of the Protection Officer. Candidates should have a proven track record of working effectively in challenging environments and collaborating with various stakeholders to achieve protection objectives.

Languages:
Fluency in Somali, both spoken and written, is mandatory for this position, as it is essential for effective communication with the target population. Additionally, candidates must possess advanced proficiency in English, enabling them to engage in professional communication and documentation. Knowledge of other languages relevant to the region may be considered an asset but is not required.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is initially for six months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability. The position is classified under Band H, indicating a mid-level role within the organization. The work location is Bosaso, Somalia, and the expected start date is in October 202
