Job Overview:
The position of UN Volunteer Expert in Child Protection in Emergencies is crucial in the aftermath of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10, 202
  • This disaster has led to widespread destruction, interrupted essential services, and exacerbated pre-existing humanitarian vulnerabilities, leaving children, adolescents, and families in urgent need of protection. The volunteer will work under the general supervision of the Child Protection Officer, supporting the timely and quality implementation of Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE) activities. This includes providing support to UNICEF partners on safe identification and referral, assisting authorities in case management, and facilitating community mental health and psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">psychosocial support through temporary learning and protection spaces. The role also involves coordination with mobile teams, implementing partners, and national child protection authorities, ensuring that all actions are aligned with UNICEF's strategies and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the UN Volunteer include updating and analyzing contextual information regarding protection risks in prioritized territories, supporting inter-institutional coordination between UNICEF and public entities (such as ICBF, Migration, Registraduría, and others) to implement humanitarian support projects focused on child protection. The volunteer will provide regular updates on the progress of humanitarian projects and the situation of implementation, offer technical assistance to UNICEF partners in the field, and monitor and report on the implementation of protection actions on the ground, ensuring quality and relevance in alignment with UNICEF's strategy. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to engage with the UNV program's mandate, promoting voluntary action within communities and dedicating part of their service time to recommended activities, such as enhancing their understanding of volunteering concepts and contributing to the UNV program's outreach efforts.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong commitment to the principles of volunteering, including solidarity, compassion, reciprocity, and autonomy. They should demonstrate competencies such as care, respect, integrity, trust, accountability, sustainability, teamwork, continuous learning, planning and organization, communication, flexibility, and a genuine commitment to the principles of volunteerism. The ideal candidate should also have experience in humanitarian contexts, particularly in child protection, and be able to work effectively in challenging environments.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is essential for this position. Candidates should ideally hold a degree in social sciences, international relations, human rights, or a related field. Advanced degrees or specialized training in child protection, humanitarian response, or emergency management will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of two years of relevant experience in child protection, humanitarian response, or related fields. Experience working with UN agencies or NGOs in emergency settings is highly desirable. Familiarity with the specific challenges faced by children in conflict or disaster-affected areas will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in Spanish is mandatory, given the local context and the need for effective communication with communities and partners. Proficiency in English is considered an asset, as it may facilitate communication with international teams and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The assignment is expected to require full availability and exclusivity with the United Nations system. The contract duration is specified, with the possibility of extensions based on funding availability, operational needs, and satisfactory performance. However, renewal of the assignment is not guaranteed. Volunteers will receive a monthly living allowance of COP 8,515,500 to cover housing, services, and ordinary living expenses. Health, life, and permanent disability insurance, as well as final repatriation (if applicable), are included. National Volunteers are responsible for securing their own housing and essentials for living. They are also part of the damage insurance plan for intentional damage.
