Job Overview:
The National PPR Specialist position is crucial for the effective implementation of the Technical Cooperation Programmes (TCPs) related to livestock and animal health within the FAO SAP framework. The role focuses on enhancing national capacities for Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) surveillance and control, aiming for WOAH-recognized PPR-free status in Pacific Island countries. The specialist will work closely with the FAO SAP Livestock and Animal Health Officer and the International PPR Expert to ensure that the objectives of TCP/SAP/4104 are met. This position requires a proactive approach to technical support, collaboration with national authorities, and engagement with local stakeholders to improve animal health systems and disease control strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The National PPR Specialist will undertake a variety of tasks, including conducting a comprehensive desk review and situation analysis of the small ruminant population and existing animal health surveillance systems in the assigned country. The specialist will contribute to organizing and participating in regional training sessions focused on PPR disease control strategies. Additionally, the role involves assisting FAO officers in providing technical support to the Ministry responsible for animal health, reviewing and enhancing PPR surveillance and reporting arrangements, and supporting community-based surveillance initiatives. The specialist will also be responsible for collecting blood samples for laboratory testing, delivering training sessions for farmers and veterinary staff, and developing communication materials to raise awareness about PPR. Regular communication with FAO officers and participation in project coordination and reporting processes are also key responsibilities. The specialist will prepare progress updates and a final report documenting activities, findings, and recommendations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in agriculture, livestock production, animal science, or a related field. A minimum of one year of relevant experience in animal health, veterinary services, livestock production, or disease surveillance is required, preferably within the Pacific region. Additionally, candidates must have a working knowledge of English and be nationals of one of the five specified countries (Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, or Cook Islands) or residents of these countries with a valid work permit.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position is a university degree in a relevant field such as agriculture, livestock production, animal science, or a closely related discipline. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of animal health and disease management in the context of the Pacific Islands.

Experience:
The position requires at least one year of relevant experience in fields related to animal health, veterinary services, livestock production, or disease surveillance.
