The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a global organization that aims to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities through sustainable development. Established in 1965, UNDP operates in approximately 170 countries and territories, working with governments and people to address their development challenges. The organization focuses on various areas including democratic governance, sustainable development, and climate change. UNDP South Africa specifically supports the government in advancing national development priorities as outlined in the National Development Plan 2030 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The organization is committed to promoting inclusive economic growth and governance, ensuring that no one is left behind in the development process.

Job Overview:
The Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the planning, implementation, administration, monitoring, and knowledge management of initiatives under the Inclusive Economy and Governance portfolio. This position is designed to provide the intern with hands-on experience in various aspects of development work, particularly in relation to socio-economic trends, policy development, and resource mobilization. The intern will work closely with the Programme Manager and will be involved in research and analysis, stakeholder engagement, and the development of communication products. This role is essential for contributing to the UNDP South Africa's goals of fostering inclusive, sustainable, and resilient development, particularly in addressing issues of poverty, unemployment, and inequality.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the Inclusive Economy and Governance portfolio. These include assisting in the planning and implementation of programs, collecting and analyzing socio-economic data, supporting the formulation of strategies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), researching potential partners and funding opportunities, developing concept notes, and supporting stakeholder engagement. The intern will also help organize events, develop communication products, attend conferences, prepare meeting minutes, and draft official documents. The role requires adaptability and a willingness to take on new challenges, as the portfolio encompasses diverse assignments.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong interest in development issues, particularly in inclusive and sustainable growth, employment promotion, and entrepreneurship development. Integrity and adherence to the UN's values and ethical standards are essential. The intern should demonstrate sensitivity to diversity and multicultural environments, as well as a commitment to promoting UNDP's vision and strategic goals. Functional competencies include a solid understanding of development issues in South Africa, critical thinking, analytical skills, excellent research capabilities, and good organizational and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory, along with computer literacy in standard software applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a first degree in economics, development studies, social sciences, or other relevant disciplines is required. An advanced degree is preferred, as it may provide a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in development work and the specific challenges faced in South Africa.

Experience:
While work experience is considered an asset, it is not a strict requirement for this internship. The ideal candidate should be eager, proactive, and willing to learn. Understanding issues related to Inclusive Economic Transformation and the SDGs is advantageous, as is exposure to international development contexts and South Africa's development landscape. This internship is an opportunity for individuals to gain practical experience and enhance their understanding of development processes.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the organization. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not explicitly required for this position.
