Job Overview:
The National Social and Environmental Safeguards Expert will be responsible for providing expert advice and guidance on social and environmental safeguards in the context of UNDP projects. This role is crucial for ensuring that projects comply with national and international standards for social and environmental protection. The expert will assess potential risks associated with projects, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure that stakeholder engagement processes are inclusive and effective. The position requires a deep understanding of social and environmental issues, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, and international partners. The expert will also be expected to contribute to capacity-building initiatives and provide training to project staff and partners on safeguards policies and practices.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in environmental science, social sciences, development studies, or a related field is required. Additional certifications or training in social and environmental safeguards will be considered an asset.
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in social and environmental safeguards, including experience in project management and implementation. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of development projects, is highly desirable.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in the Republic of North Macedonia is an advantage, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments of social and environmental risks associated with UNDP projects and provide recommendations for mitigation measures.
- Develop and implement social and environmental safeguard frameworks and policies in line with UNDP standards.
- Facilitate stakeholder consultations and ensure that the voices of affected communities are heard and considered in project planning and implementation.
- Provide training and capacity-building support to project teams and partners on social and environmental safeguards.
- Monitor and evaluate the implementation of safeguard measures and report on compliance with national and international standards.
- Collaborate with other experts and stakeholders to integrate social and environmental considerations into project design and implementation.
- Prepare reports and documentation related to social and environmental safeguards for internal and external stakeholders.
- Stay updated on best practices and developments in the field of social and environmental safeguards.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven expertise in social and environmental safeguards, with a strong understanding of relevant national and international frameworks.
- Experience in conducting social and environmental impact assessments and developing mitigation strategies.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex data and information.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Knowledge of participatory approaches and stakeholder engagement processes.
- Familiarity with UNDP policies and procedures related to social and environmental safeguards is an advantage.
