Job Overview: The UN Strategic intern" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Communications Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the Strategic Communications Section of the Office for Coordination and Shared Services (OCSS). This internship is designed for individuals who are passionate about gender issues and public advocacy, particularly in the context of the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The intern will assist in various communication efforts aimed at promoting gender parity and preventing misconduct, including sexual exploitation and abuse. The position offers a unique opportunity to engage with UN peacekeeping operations and contribute to meaningful campaigns and public events. The intern will work closely with the Chief of the Strategic Communications Section and will be involved in developing multimedia content, drafting publications, and monitoring social media trends related to gender and misconduct.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a wide range of tasks including: assisting with strategic communications and public outreach on gender issues; developing multimedia products and content for various digital platforms; drafting and editing publications related to UN Peacekeeping; supporting the planning and live coverage of events; assisting in the implementation of campaigns and public events; monitoring social media to inform communications efforts; contributing ideas for media stories; preparing internal summaries and reports; and performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor. This role requires a proactive approach and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). A field of study closely related to the internship is required. Additionally, applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals, as well as the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Educational Background: Candidates should have completed or be in the process of completing a relevant degree program. This includes students in their final year of a bachelor’s degree, as well as those pursuing or having completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion will be required during the application process.
Experience: While professional work experience is not required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include experience in communications, public relations, gender studies, or related fields.
Languages: Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory. Knowledge of French is strongly desirable, and proficiency in another UN official language is considered an advantage.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid and requires a commitment of 35 hours per week. The expected duration is six months, with a desired start date of October 5, 2026, or sooner. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Non-U.S. citizens may need to obtain a G-4 visa to undertake the internship in the United States. The UN does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and applicants must ensure they have the necessary work authorization before starting the internship.
