Job Overview:
The position of National Consultant – Biodiversity, Protected Areas and Wetlands Specialist is crucial for the UNDP's efforts in enhancing biodiversity conservation and management of protected areas and wetlands in the Republic of North Macedonia. The consultant will be responsible for providing expert advice and technical support in the development and implementation of strategies and action plans aimed at preserving biodiversity and ensuring sustainable management of natural resources. The consultant will work closely with local stakeholders, government agencies, and international partners to promote best practices in biodiversity conservation and to facilitate the integration of biodiversity considerations into national and local development plans. The assignment is expected to take place from September 2026 to November 2026, during which the consultant will engage in various activities including assessments, workshops, and the preparation of reports and recommendations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The National Consultant will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities including but not limited to: conducting assessments of biodiversity and wetland ecosystems; developing management plans for protected areas; providing technical guidance on biodiversity conservation practices; facilitating stakeholder engagement and capacity building workshops; preparing detailed reports on findings and recommendations; collaborating with government and non-governmental organizations to implement biodiversity initiatives; monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of conservation strategies; and ensuring compliance with national and international biodiversity policies and agreements. The consultant will also be expected to contribute to the development of communication materials to raise awareness about biodiversity issues among the public and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in environmental science, ecology, or a related field, with a focus on biodiversity and conservation. Proven experience in working with protected areas and wetlands management is essential. The consultant should have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are required to effectively convey complex information to various audiences. Familiarity with UNDP's policies and procedures, as well as experience in project management, will be considered an asset.
Educational Background:
A minimum of a Master's degree in environmental science, ecology, conservation biology, or a related field is required. Additional certifications or training in biodiversity conservation, protected area management, or wetland ecology will be advantageous. Candidates with a PhD in a relevant field will be given preference.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of professional experience in biodiversity conservation, with a proven track record of working on projects related to protected areas and wetlands. Experience in the Republic of North Macedonia or the Balkan region will be highly regarded. The consultant should also have experience in stakeholder engagement and capacity building, as well as familiarity with national and international biodiversity frameworks.
Languages:
Fluency in Macedonian and English is mandatory. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in the region will be considered an asset, as it may facilitate communication with local stakeholders and communities.

- The consultant will be expected to work full-time during this period. The position is open to both national and international candidates, and compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
