Job Overview:
The Protection Officer (psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Psychosocial Support) plays a crucial role in providing psychosocial counseling to project beneficiaries and targeted communities. Reporting directly to the Protection Team Leader in Herat, the officer is responsible for establishing and maintaining positive relationships with beneficiaries, community members, and humanitarian actors. The role involves developing field activity plans, conducting individual and group counseling sessions, and raising awareness about psychosocial issues. The officer will also identify stressors within the community and provide appropriate counseling and support. Additionally, the position requires facilitating activities at Child Friendly Spaces and leading group therapy sessions for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The officer will work closely with other team members to ensure effective service delivery and community engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Protection Officer's duties include establishing and maintaining relationships with beneficiaries and stakeholders, developing activity plans, providing individual and group psychosocial counseling, and conducting awareness sessions. The officer will build trust within the community, identify stressors, and provide counseling to help manage stress. Responsibilities also include facilitating activities at Child Friendly Spaces, providing support to SGBV survivors, conducting interviews and surveys, and collaborating with MEAL officers to assess client satisfaction. The officer will organize community discussions to address psychosocial issues and SGBV, support needs assessments for future programming, and submit weekly progress reports to the line manager. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have at least 2-3 years of experience in psychological or psychosocial counseling, preferably with internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, or returnees. Strong experience working with vulnerable clients, including SGBV survivors and child abuse victims, is essential. Knowledge of child-friendly interviewing techniques and familiarity with IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Settings are required. Understanding the psychosocial support needs of IDPs and refugees in Afghanistan is also crucial.

Educational Background:
A university degree in Psychology or Social Work is required, along with a valid certificate from the Ministry of Health certifying the candidate as a professional psychosocial counselor. Candidates should have a solid understanding of humanitarian principles, human rights, and the needs of IDPs and refugees in Afghanistan. An interest in humanitarian work and human rights, along with the ability to learn and adapt, is important.

Experience:
Candidates should possess a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant work experience in psychological or psychosocial counseling, particularly with vulnerable populations such as IDPs, refugees, and survivors of SGBV. Demonstrated experience in providing counseling and support in challenging environments is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in Dari and Pashto is mandatory for this position, while a good knowledge of English is preferred but not essential.
