Job Overview:
The Senior Energy Associate position is crucial for providing operational and technical support to the UNHCR energy program in the Kakuma and Kalobeyei operational area. This role emphasizes activity monitoring, coordination, and implementation of energy projects aimed at enhancing sustainability and integrating energy solutions with various sectors such as health, education, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene). The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the timely and quality delivery of energy interventions, while also channeling strategic information to senior management. The position requires a strong focus on transitioning to clean, renewable energy solutions for both refugees and host communities, aligning with UNHCR's global strategies and local development plans.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Energy Associate will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including: conducting regular field visits to monitor ongoing energy projects, maintaining an updated activity tracker, monitoring the quality of implementation of contractor activities, verifying the functioning of energy systems, preparing technical monitoring reports, supervising training for local youth on energy systems, supporting the rehabilitation of non-functional energy systems, collaborating with the WASH section for solarization of boreholes, providing technical guidance to partners, and engaging with stakeholders in the energy sector. The role also involves producing structured reports on activity progress, challenges, and recommendations, and documenting lessons learned from energy interventions.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree with at least four years of relevant experience or a Master's degree with two years of relevant work experience in fields such as Renewable Energy, Energy Engineering, Environmental Science, or Sustainable Development. A minimum of two to four years of professional experience in renewable energy project implementation and monitoring is required, along with familiarity with solar energy systems and clean cooking technologies. Experience in humanitarian or integrated development contexts is highly desirable, as is knowledge of the Kalobeyei Integrated Socio-Economic Development Plan.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's degree in Renewable Energy, Energy Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainable Development, or a closely related field. A Master's degree in one of these areas is preferred, particularly for candidates with less work experience. The educational qualifications should provide a solid foundation in energy systems and sustainable practices relevant to the role.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two to four years of relevant professional experience in renewable energy project implementation, monitoring, and coordination. Candidates should have experience in humanitarian or development contexts, particularly in integrated settlement settings. Familiarity with solar energy systems, clean cooking technologies, and market-based energy approaches is essential. Prior experience working in refugee settings or remote, arid environments is also advantageous.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the communities served in the Kakuma and Kalobeyei areas.
