Job Overview:
As a Computing Engineer in the Storage and Data Management group at CERN, you will play a crucial role in developing the next-generation backup solution for the laboratory's services. This position involves working within the Tape Archive and Backup (TAB) section, which is responsible for managing the CERN Tape Archive software and overseeing 1.5 Petabytes of data in cold storage. Your responsibilities will include research and development, software development, and operational tasks. You will be tasked with creating a future on-premises backup solution that utilizes tiered storage accessed via an S3 API, ensuring that hot data is stored on disk while cold data is migrated to tape storage. You will also be involved in monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and diagnosing system failures, requiring collaboration with various services within the Storage and Data Management group and across CERN.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Your primary duties will include integrating backup orchestration with both disk and tape storage systems, developing and maintaining software using C++ and Linux, and managing systems integration, configuration, testing, monitoring, and alerting for the new backup system. You will contribute to planning the migration of existing services to the new backup solution and participate in operations, troubleshooting, and support as part of a collaborative team. Additionally, you will be responsible for contributing to the development of procedures and documentation related to the backup system.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have experience in software development using C++ and Python on Linux platforms. Familiarity with S3 object storage is highly desirable, along with additional experience in Ceph, systems integration, backup systems, and tiered storage systems. Strong skills in C++ software development, Linux systems administration, and scripting in Bash and Python are essential. A commitment to learning French is also required, alongside proficiency in spoken and written English. While not mandatory, experience with S3 API, databases (SQL), version control systems (e.g., git), containers (e.g., Kubernetes), and monitoring tools (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus) would be advantageous.

Educational Background:
Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Candidates without a university degree are not eligible for this position, and those with a PhD are also excluded from consideration.
