Job Overview:
The role of the Protection Intern - Legal is primarily to provide support under the supervision of the Protection Team Leader and designated Protection / Legal Aid staff. This position is crucial for assisting with outreach, administrative, and logistical tasks related to legal awareness and civil documentation activities within DRC community centers and mobile locations. The intern will not engage in independent legal counseling or case management but will play a supportive role in facilitating community outreach and ensuring that legal activities are conducted smoothly and effectively. The intern will be responsible for promoting safe and inclusive participation during legal activities, ensuring that community members are informed about services and schedules, and maintaining accurate records of attendance and activities. This role is essential for enhancing the capacity of the Protection / Legal Aid team and ensuring that the needs of the community are met in a respectful and dignified manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Protection Intern - Legal include:
  • Community Outreach and Activity Support: - Assist in community outreach and mobilization efforts using approved messages and materials. - Prepare venues for legal awareness and civil documentation activities, ensuring accessibility and privacy. - Distribute DRC materials and communicate information regarding services, schedules, and locations. - Record attendance and collect necessary information under staff direction. - Promote safe and respectful participation during legal activities.
  • Field and Coordination Support: - Support field visits and mobile activities, including appointment scheduling. - Communicate with community members about legal activities and access arrangements as instructed. - Assist with non-substantive administrative tasks and organization of activity materials. - Refer urgent concerns to designated DRC staff through approved pathways.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: - Maintain activity records, attendance sheets, and other documentation. - Support data entry and filing of records in accordance with DRC data protection procedures. - Report operational challenges and observations from field activities to supervising staff.
  • Other Responsibilities: - Maintain positive working relationships with team members and support a collaborative environment. - Adhere to DRC’s mission, values, and Code of Conduct. - Comply with confidentiality and data protection requirements. - Participate in required training and perform other duties as assigned by the line manager.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Protection Intern - Legal position include: - Previous experience in community outreach, legal aid, or protection activities through volunteer or internship opportunities with NGOs or humanitarian organizations is preferred. - Ability to follow instructions and work under close supervision. - Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and reliability. - Flexibility to work overtime when necessary and willingness to collaborate with diverse groups. - Demonstrated interest in humanitarian work and supporting individuals affected by conflict.

Educational Background:
Candidates for the Protection Intern - Legal position should be final-year students or recent graduates in Law, Legal Studies, or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the legal frameworks and principles that underpin the work of the Danish Refugee Council in providing legal aid and support to vulnerable populations.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have some level of experience, preferably through internships or volunteer work in community outreach, legal aid, or protection activities. While formal experience is not mandatory, familiarity with the workings of NGOs or humanitarian organizations will be advantageous. The ability to work under supervision and follow established protocols is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in Arabic, both reading and writing, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required. The ability to communicate effectively in Arabic is crucial for engaging with community members and facilitating legal awareness activities.

The contract for the Protection Intern - Legal position is set to last until December 31, 2026, with an immediate start date. The duty station for this role is Turbah, Yemen. Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s National Terms of Employment.
