Job Overview:
The UN Public Information Officer will be responsible for overseeing and editing summaries of meetings related to human rights treaty bodies and the Human Rights Council, ensuring that all information products meet the United Nations' editorial standards. The role requires the incumbent to promote the effective use of modern editorial and digital tools to enhance communication efficiency. The officer will also develop high-impact multimedia content for social media platforms, plan and implement communication campaigns, and provide expert advice on public affairs and communications issues. The position demands a proactive approach to identifying funding sources for campaigns and developing strategic partnerships to maximize the impact of promotional objectives. Additionally, the officer will evaluate the effectiveness of communication activities and represent the UN in various meetings and public events.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the UN Public Information Officer include overseeing the editing of meeting summaries, ensuring accuracy and clarity in communications, and promoting the use of digital tools. The officer will develop multimedia content for social media, plan communication campaigns, and provide guidance on public relations issues. Responsibilities also include preparing diverse outreach products, evaluating communication activities, and representing the UN in public engagements. The officer will manage the publications program, oversee the maintenance of information materials, and assist in the unit's day-to-day operations. The role may involve mentoring junior staff and analyzing data to inform decision-making.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of public information and communication, with the ability to analyze political developments and public attitudes. The officer should demonstrate the ability to conceptualize and implement major information campaigns, handle sensitive situations diplomatically, and produce clear written communications. Professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to plan and organize work efficiently are essential qualifications for this position.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Candidates should have experience in editing and developing communications products for human rights intergovernmental bodies and translating complex policy discussions into accessible content. Experience in social media strategy and managing content across multiple platforms is also necessary, along with supervisory experience overseeing a team of at least two staff members.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, and both are required for this position. Candidates should possess a minimum proficiency level of III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for both languages. Additionally, knowledge of Arabic, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin), or Russian is desirable, with a minimum proficiency level of I in these languages.
