Job Overview:
The FAO Regional Livestock Assistant for Dairy Industry Development will play a crucial role in enhancing livestock production systems in Afghanistan, particularly focusing on dairy. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the development of integrated livestock and dairy production systems, which includes improving animal health, feeding, breeding, and farmer capacity building. The position emphasizes productivity and quality enhancement in dairy production, contributing to strengthening dairy value chains and market linkages. The assistant will also engage in training farmers on best practices, tracking market prices, and supporting vaccination campaigns to ensure animal health and promote sustainable practices. This role is vital for the agricultural resilience of Afghanistan, as it aims to protect livelihoods and boost local production of nutritious foods.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the FAO Regional Livestock Assistant include collaborating with local farmers to improve livestock production practices, facilitating training sessions on livestock management, breeding techniques, and health care for farmers. The assistant will coordinate vaccination programs and animal health campaigns to prevent diseases in livestock, develop and implement nutritional programs tailored to dairy and meat-producing animals, and contribute to the development of an extension, health, feed, fodder crop, and AI data collection network. Additionally, the assistant will support the head of the animal production and health team in improving practices and controlling zoonotic diseases, assist in developing value-added dairy products, promote the benefits of dairy cooperatives, and build relationships with farmers and stakeholders in the livestock and dairy sectors. The role also involves collecting and analyzing data on livestock and dairy production, monitoring and evaluating the impact of development interventions, and collaborating with private sector partners to align development efforts with regional objectives.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in veterinary science, livestock production, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience in veterinary or livestock is required, with at least 2 years of experience with the United Nations or an International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) being desirable. Candidates should have a working knowledge (level C) of English and local languages such as Dari and/or Pashto. Additionally, candidates must be nationals of Afghanistan and demonstrate FAO core competencies including results focus, teamwork, communication, building effective relationships, and knowledge sharing.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in veterinary science, livestock production, or a related field. It is essential that the educational qualifications are obtained from institutions accredited or recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
Experience:
The position requires at least 5 years of relevant experience in veterinary or livestock, with a preference for candidates who have 2 years of experience working with the United Nations or other international organizations, particularly in the field of veterinary services. Experience in coordinating with relevant institutions and communities is also preferred.
Languages:
Candidates must have a working knowledge of English and local languages, specifically Dari and/or Pashto. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication and collaboration with local farmers and stakeholders.
