Job Overview:
As a Communications Officer at DRC, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility and understanding of DRC’s mission, programs, and advocacy priorities. Your primary responsibility will be to support communication activities across various projects, ensuring that all outputs align with donor visibility requirements. This position requires a proactive approach to developing and producing a range of communication materials, including social media content, human interest stories, interviews, multimedia materials, and publications. You will also be responsible for managing the quarterly DRC Ukraine newsletter, coordinating inputs from program teams, and overseeing distribution through platforms like Mailchimp. Regular updates of DRC Ukraine's digital platforms, including the website and social media channels, will be part of your duties, as well as supporting the implementation of project communication and visibility plans. You will coordinate with external communication service providers, develop technical specifications for communication materials, maintain an organized archive of visibility materials, and assist in media engagement and event organization. This role is essential for promoting DRC’s work and ensuring effective communication with various stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communications Officer will be tasked with a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Developing and producing diverse communication materials such as social media posts, human interest stories, interviews, multimedia content, and publications that effectively convey DRC’s mission and activities.
  • Preparing and managing the quarterly DRC Ukraine newsletter, which involves drafting content, coordinating with program teams for input, and managing distribution through Mailchimp.
  • Ensuring regular updates of DRC Ukraine's digital platforms, including the website and social media channels, to maintain current and engaging content.
  • Supporting the implementation of project communication and visibility plans, ensuring adherence to donor communication and visibility requirements.
  • Coordinating with external communication service providers, including photographers, videographers, designers, and translators, and preparing Terms of Reference (ToR) and technical briefs for their engagement.
  • Developing technical specifications for the production of communication and visibility materials, including printed products.
  • Maintaining and updating a structured archive of photos, videos, and other visibility materials for easy access and reference.
  • Supporting media engagement efforts and preparing DRC staff members for interviews to ensure effective representation of the organization.
  • Assisting in the organization of internal and external events, contributing to the capacity building of field teams on communication tools and visibility requirements.

Required Qualifications:
To be considered for the Communications Officer position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in communications, media, public relations, or advocacy.
  • At least 1 year of experience working in an international non-governmental organization (INGO) or civil society organization in a communications-related role.
  • Proven experience in developing communication materials, including social media content, human interest stories, interviews, and articles.
  • Experience in preparing Terms of Reference (ToR) and technical assignments for communication service providers.
  • Demonstrated ability to ensure compliance with donor communication and visibility requirements, particularly those of institutional donors such as the European Union, Danish MFA, SDC, SIDA, GFFO, or similar entities.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, advocacy, or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of communication strategies and effectively engaging with diverse audiences.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a solid level of experience, specifically at least 2 years in communications, media, public relations, or advocacy roles. Additionally, having at least 1 year of experience in an INGO or civil society organization in a communications capacity is crucial for understanding the unique challenges and requirements of the sector.

Languages:
Full professional proficiency in both English and Ukrainian is mandatory for this position. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication with local stakeholders and international partners. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.

Additional Notes:
The position offers a fixed-term contract of either 6 or 9 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and the availability of funding after a successful 3-month probationary period. The role is classified as non-managerial and is based in Kyiv. The expected start date is as soon as possible. The salary and conditions will align with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for employees on national contracts, starting from EUR 2,025 gross per month, depending on experience and qualifications.
