Job Overview:
The Protection Assistant will be an integral member of the DRC Protection team, working closely with the Protection Team Leader, Manager, and other team members to ensure the effective implementation of protection interventions. This role involves engaging with affected communities to facilitate community-based protection initiatives, running protection desks, delivering the Engaging Men as Allies (EMAA) curriculum, conducting psych-social sessions, and monitoring protection issues. The Protection Assistant will also lead community volunteers and strengthen the capacities of community structures, ensuring that protection concerns are addressed in a culturally sensitive and effective manner. The position requires a proactive approach to community engagement and the ability to adapt to the evolving needs of the population served.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Protection Assistant will be responsible for conducting age-, gender-, and diversity-appropriate focus group discussions (FGDs) with persons of concern to identify protection concerns in line with established guidelines. They will conduct key informant interviews (KIIs) with community members representing persons with specific needs (PSNs) to identify protection risks. Staying informed about the social, cultural, and community context is crucial, as is supporting the collection and analysis of relevant data. The role includes mobilizing communities for awareness-raising activities, collaborating with community volunteers and partner organizations to disseminate information on human rights and available services. The Protection Assistant will engage with affected communities to enhance their capacity to identify protection risks and support community-led solutions. They will deliver the EMAA curriculum and identify safe community spaces for protection interventions, ensuring community ownership and sustainability. Additionally, the role involves identifying and referring protection cases to appropriate services, mapping referral pathways, overseeing the delivery of interventions by community volunteers, and maintaining accurate documentation and reporting of project activities. Participation in planning sessions, report writing, and coordination meetings is also expected, along with any other duties assigned by the Protection Manager.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess 1-2 years of community-based experience involving human rights and multi-sector protection. They should demonstrate knowledge of protection minimum standards, principles of protection in emergencies, and human rights principles. An understanding of protection issues, particularly concerning PSNs, women, and children, is essential. Familiarity with the humanitarian context in Sudan and the challenges related to conflict and displacement is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is necessary, along with a commitment to human rights, women's rights, and child protection principles. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams are crucial, as is the capacity to remain productive under pressure and prioritize effectively.
Educational Background:
A Higher Diploma or Degree in Social Sciences, Law, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background will provide the necessary foundation for understanding the complexities of protection work and the legal frameworks surrounding human rights and humanitarian assistance.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have 1-2 years of relevant experience in community-based roles, particularly in areas related to human rights and protection. This experience should include direct engagement with affected populations and an understanding of the challenges they face, particularly in conflict-affected settings.
Languages:
Fluency in both Arabic and English is required, with strong English writing and organizational skills being essential for effective communication and documentation in this role.

This position is a national project-based contract with a duration of 15 months. The salary range starts from USD 1,025.00 per month. The duty station for this role is Gedaref, and the start date is as soon as possible.
