Job Overview:
The UNHCR Regional Bureau for West and Central Africa plays a crucial role in supporting country operations, governments, and regional partners to enhance protection responses for refugees, asylum-seekers, and other vulnerable populations. This position as an Online Volunteer is designed to contribute to selected research and analytical activities that align with regional protection priorities and broader institutional learning efforts. The role offers a unique opportunity to engage with regional initiatives while gaining valuable insights into international protection and asylum capacity development. The volunteer will work under the supervision of a protection officer, contributing to various tasks that involve research, legal analysis, and documentation, thereby playing a significant part in the agency's mission to protect those in need.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteer will be responsible for a diverse range of activities, including but not limited to: conducting desk research on topics related to protection, asylum, and mixed movements; collecting, reviewing, and organizing information from various sources such as reports, guidance documents, and meeting records; supporting the preparation of analytical summaries, briefing notes, concept notes, and background papers; assisting in the compilation and synthesis of information from multiple countries and stakeholders; contributing to the development of knowledge products, presentations, and communication materials; documenting good practices, lessons learned, and emerging trends; supporting information management and knowledge-sharing initiatives; organizing and structuring reference materials and technical resources; preparing materials for regional meetings, webinars, workshops, and learning initiatives; and providing additional research and support as required.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and concise formats. Proficiency in using various research tools and methodologies is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a commitment to humanitarian principles and a strong understanding of refugee protection issues. Additionally, candidates should have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
Educational Background:
A background in international relations, law, social sciences, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should ideally be pursuing or have completed a degree in a relevant discipline, which provides a solid foundation for understanding the complexities of refugee protection and asylum processes.
Experience:
While prior experience in research or humanitarian work is advantageous, it is not strictly required. However, candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in refugee issues and a willingness to learn and contribute to the UNHCR's mission. Experience in working with diverse teams and stakeholders is a plus, as is familiarity with the UN system and its operations.
Languages:
