Job Overview:
The Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) Preparedness Officer position is crucial in the context of the ongoing BVD outbreak in neighboring countries, which poses a significant risk of importation into Tanzania. The role involves providing technical and operational support to strengthen the Ministry of Health Zanzibar's preparedness efforts. This includes enhancing surveillance, laboratory readiness, infection prevention and control, case management, logistics, risk communication, and community engagement. The officer will work under the supervision of the WHO Emergency Preparedness and Response Team Lead and the WHO Liaison Officer for Zanzibar, focusing on planning, field implementation, monitoring, documentation, reporting, and capacity building to ensure operational readiness against BVD.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the BVD Preparedness Officer include supporting the implementation of the BVD preparedness workplan, organizing preparedness activities at both national and district levels, and assisting in the execution of preparedness interventions across various technical pillars. The officer will follow up on the implementation of agreed preparedness actions, assist in surveillance, laboratory activities, infection prevention and control, case management, logistics, risk communication, and community engagement. They will also participate in field missions, support simulation exercises and drills, maintain preparedness activity trackers, compile information for dashboards, monitor progress against preparedness plans, document lessons learned, prepare weekly updates, draft mission and technical reports, support training workshops, and assist in organizing technical meetings. Additionally, the officer will support preparedness activities for other public health emergencies as required and perform other duties assigned by the WHO Representative or WHE Team Lead.
Required Qualifications:
The position requires a strong background in public health, emergency preparedness, or a related field. Candidates should possess excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. A proactive approach to problem-solving and adaptability to changing situations are essential. The officer should demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity, with a commitment to client orientation and results.
Educational Background:
A degree in public health, epidemiology, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in emergency preparedness or infectious diseases would be advantageous. Candidates should have a solid understanding of health systems and emergency response frameworks.
Experience:
Candidates should have relevant experience in public health, particularly in emergency preparedness and response. Experience working with governmental health agencies, international organizations, or NGOs in similar roles is highly desirable. Familiarity with the Bundibugyo Virus Disease or similar infectious diseases will be considered an asset.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of Swahili is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and communities. Additional languages may be beneficial but are not required.
Additional Notes:
The position is based in Zanzibar, which is classified as a family duty station, providing adequate housing, banking, telecommunications, and health services. The assignment will involve regular travel to various districts, health facilities, seaports, airports, and other Points of Entry. The volunteer will closely collaborate with the Ministry of Health and other partners involved in BVD preparedness efforts.
