The National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) is a statutory body established to coordinate, promote, support, and advocate for youth development initiatives across Malawi. NYCOM's mission is to empower and inspire young people to become productive, responsible, and transformative citizens who contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of Malawi. The organization works through strategic partnerships with government, development partners, civil society organizations, and the private sector to enhance the welfare and potential of Malawi’s youth. NYCOM serves as a platform that amplifies the voices of young people, ensuring their active involvement in national development processes and decision-making. The Council is dedicated to creating opportunities for participation, innovation, entrepreneurship, leadership, skills development, and socio-economic advancement for the youth of Malawi.
Job Overview:
The 2026 Malawi National Youth Summit aims to showcase diverse youth talent through artistic performances, including music, dance, poetry, spoken word, drama, cultural performances, acrobatics, and other creative expressions. To ensure a transparent, fair, and high-quality selection process, Online Volunteers are required to support the review and assessment of artist performance applications submitted through the summit application platform. Volunteers will play a crucial role in identifying talented performers whose submissions align with the objectives, values, and programmatic themes of the Youth Summit. This position is vital for ensuring that the summit features a diverse range of artistic expressions that reflect the creativity and talent of Malawi's youth.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Media and Publicity Subcommittee, Online Volunteers will be responsible for reviewing artist performance applications submitted through the online platform. This includes assessing submitted materials such as videos, audio recordings, portfolios, biographies, and supporting documents. Volunteers will evaluate applications against predefined selection criteria and scoring guidelines. They will support the shortlisting of performers across various categories, including musicians, dancers, poets and spoken word artists, acrobats, cultural performance groups, theatre and drama performers, and other creative artists. By the end of the assignment, volunteers are expected to review assigned artist applications within agreed timelines, complete evaluation scorecards for all assigned submissions, provide written recommendations and comments for shortlisted candidates, contribute to a consolidated shortlist of performers for the 2026 Malawi National Youth Summit, and submit a brief summary report highlighting key observations and recommendations.
Required Qualifications:
Volunteers should possess a strong understanding of the arts and cultural sector, particularly in relation to youth engagement and development. They should have experience in reviewing artistic performances or applications, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to assess artistic merit. Strong analytical skills and the ability to provide constructive feedback are essential. Volunteers should also demonstrate a commitment to promoting youth empowerment and development through the arts.
Educational Background:
A background in arts, cultural studies, youth development, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with relevant experience in the arts sector, even without formal qualifications, may also be considered. Knowledge of the Malawian cultural context and youth issues will be an advantage.
Experience:
Previous experience in a similar role, particularly in reviewing artistic performances or applications, is highly desirable. Volunteers should have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team and meet deadlines. Experience in youth engagement initiatives or cultural events will be beneficial.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all applications and communications will be conducted in English. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Malawi would be an asset, as it may enhance communication with applicants and understanding of cultural contexts.
Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and the duration of the assignment will be determined based on the timeline of the application review process. Volunteers will be expected to work remotely and may need to commit to flexible hours to accommodate the review timelines. This role is suitable for individuals who are passionate about the arts and youth development and are looking to contribute to a meaningful initiative that supports the creative talents of young people in Malawi.
