Gender Specialist to Support the Implementation of the Gender Equality Seal

Job Overview:
The Gender Specialist position is designed to support the implementation of the Gender Equality Seal for Public Institutions in South Africa. This role is crucial in promoting gender equality within public institutions, ensuring that gender considerations are integrated into policies, programs, and practices. The specialist will work closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners, to facilitate the adoption of gender-responsive approaches. The position requires a deep understanding of gender issues, the ability to analyze and assess gender-related policies, and the capacity to provide technical assistance and training to public institutions. The specialist will also be responsible for monitoring and evaluating the progress of the Gender Equality Seal implementation, ensuring that objectives are met and that best practices are shared across institutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Gender Specialist include:

• Conducting assessments of current gender policies and practices within public institutions to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
• Developing and implementing strategies to promote the Gender Equality Seal, including training programs and workshops for public officials.
• Collaborating with stakeholders to create a supportive environment for gender equality initiatives.
• Monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the Gender Equality Seal, providing feedback and recommendations for continuous improvement.
• Preparing reports and documentation on progress and challenges related to gender equality initiatives.
• Engaging in advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the importance of gender equality in public institutions.
• Providing technical support and guidance to public institutions in developing gender-responsive policies and programs.
• Facilitating knowledge sharing and best practices among institutions participating in the Gender Equality Seal initiative.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in gender studies, social sciences, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in gender equality, women's empowerment, or related areas is required. Experience working with public institutions and knowledge of gender-responsive budgeting and policy-making processes are essential. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical skills, the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, and excellent communication skills. Proficiency in project management and familiarity with monitoring and evaluation frameworks related to gender equality initiatives are also important.

Educational Background:
A master's degree in gender studies, social sciences, international development, or a related field is required for this position. Candidates with a bachelor's degree may be considered if they have extensive relevant experience in gender equality and public policy.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of relevant experience in gender equality initiatives, particularly within public institutions. Experience in implementing gender-responsive policies, conducting training, and engaging with stakeholders at various levels is highly desirable. Familiarity with UNDP's work and gender equality frameworks will be an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly local languages spoken in South Africa, is considered an asset and may enhance communication with stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as an individual contractor role for a duration of 12 months. The Gender Specialist will be expected to work full-time and may be required to travel within South Africa as part of their duties. The contract may be extended based on performance and the availability of funding. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and in line with UNDP's policies for individual contractors.
