Job Overview: The position of Myanmar Researcher within the Asia Division of Human Rights Watch is a critical role aimed at investigating, analyzing, and advocating against human rights abuses in Myanmar and related regional issues. The researcher will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive research and advocacy agenda focused on human rights issues pertinent to Myanmar. This role is vital for promoting awareness and driving change regarding human rights violations in the region. The researcher will engage with various stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, and the media, to ensure that human rights concerns are effectively communicated and addressed. The position is full-time and is expected to start in September 2026, with a preference for candidates based in Thailand, although other locations in Southeast Asia may also be considered.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Myanmar Researcher will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including: researching, monitoring, and documenting the human rights situation in Myanmar and neighboring countries; collecting and analyzing information from various sources such as governments, media, NGOs, and victims; writing and publicizing reports, briefing papers, and submissions to international bodies; leading the development of strategies to change abusive laws and practices; responding to media inquiries and projecting human rights concerns in public debates; collaborating with local NGOs to enhance their work without compromising their security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security; assisting in fundraising efforts; liaising with HRW staff globally to ensure effective coordination; traveling internationally as required; and delivering outputs in a timely manner consistent with the Asia Division's priorities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced degree or equivalent experience in fields such as international relations, journalism, law, or social sciences. A minimum of five years of professional-level experience working in or on Myanmar, particularly in human rights documentation, is required. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Burmese, along with significant knowledge of human rights and political dynamics in Myanmar. Familiarity with the refugee situation and the ability to conduct interviews safely, both remotely and in-person, are essential. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to produce high-quality written materials under tight deadlines and have a strong understanding of international human rights law and humanitarian law.
Educational Background: An advanced degree in international relations, journalism, law, social sciences, or a related field is required for this position. Equivalent levels of experience may also be considered, particularly if they demonstrate a strong understanding of human rights issues and the political landscape in Myanmar.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of professional-level experience, specifically working in or on Myanmar with a focus on human rights documentation. Candidates should have a proven track record of conducting research and advocacy related to human rights issues, as well as experience working with various stakeholders in the field.
