Job Overview:
The position of Engineer (Digital Infrastructure) is based in Brunssum, The Netherlands, where the NCIA is transforming its IT services to support NATO’s Digital Endeavour. The successful candidate will join the CSU Brunssum, which is responsible for end-to-end Communications and Information Systems (CIS) services. This role involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the operational integrity and security of NATO's information systems. The Engineer will be expected to provide guidance on security controls, conduct risk and impact analyses, design system components, and collaborate with technical teams to ensure effective system integration. The role also includes monitoring infrastructure performance, managing capacity, and providing on-demand support outside of regular business hours, thereby playing a crucial part in maintaining NATO's operational capabilities during peacetime, crises, and wartime.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Engineer (Digital Infrastructure) will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties, including:
  • Providing guidance on the application and operation of physical, procedural, and technical security controls.
  • Explaining the purpose of security controls and performing security risk and business impact analysis for medium complexity information systems.
  • Designing system components using appropriate modeling techniques in accordance with established architectures and design standards.
  • Identifying and evaluating alternative design options and trade-offs.
  • Offering technical expertise to enable the configuration of system components and equipment for testing.
  • Collaborating with technical teams to develop system integration plans and reporting on progress.
  • Provisioning, installing, configuring, and maintaining infrastructure services and components.
  • Monitoring and reporting on infrastructure load, performance, and security events.
  • Monitoring operational systems for resource usage and failure rates to facilitate system software tuning. 1
  • Applying system software parameters to maximize throughput and efficiency. 1
  • Preparing and maintaining operational procedures for storage management. 1
  • Monitoring capacity, performance, availability, and other operational metrics. 1
  • Providing on-demand support outside of business hours, which may require on-site presence. 1
  • Deputizing for the head of the IIS section when necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a nationally recognized or certified university in a related discipline, along with at least 2 years of post-related experience. Alternatively, candidates without a university degree may still qualify if they can demonstrate at least 6 years of extensive and progressive expertise in duties relevant to the position. Additionally, candidates should have at least 2 years of practical experience in designing, implementing, and managing technology, software, and hardware components that ensure the smooth functioning of servers, storage systems, data centers, and cloud services. Experience in troubleshooting infrastructure-related issues and performing regular maintenance is also essential. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with good analytical skills and a solution-oriented attitude, are required. Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree from a nationally recognized or certified university in a relevant field. This educational requirement is crucial as it provides the foundational knowledge necessary for the technical and analytical tasks associated with the role. In cases where candidates do not possess a degree, significant relevant experience may be considered as a substitute, highlighting the importance of practical knowledge in the field.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of practical experience in the relevant field, specifically in designing, implementing, and managing the underlying technology that supports servers, storage systems, data centers, and cloud services. Candidates should also have experience troubleshooting infrastructure-related issues and performing regular maintenance, which is critical for ensuring the operational integrity of NATO's information systems. The emphasis on practical experience underscores the need for candidates to have hands-on skills and a deep understanding of the technologies involved.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as effective communication is essential in a multinational organization like NATO. The position offers a 5-year contract with a competitive tax-free salary, along with household and children's allowances.
