The ECA aims to foster the economic and social development of its member states, facilitate regional integration, and promote sustainable development. The organization operates in multiple countries across Africa and is committed to addressing the continent's challenges through research, policy analysis, and capacity-building initiatives. The ECA employs a diverse workforce and is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment that respects and values diversity.

Job Overview:
The Diversity and Outreach Intern will work within the Recruitment Services Unit (RSU) of the Human Resources Management Section (HRMS) in the Administration and Conference Management Division (ACMD) of the ECA. This internship is designed to provide support in various activities aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion within the organization. The intern will be involved in outreach efforts to engage underrepresented groups, conduct research on inclusive recruitment practices, and assist in creating a more accessible workplace. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying networks and platforms for outreach, drafting inclusive messaging, and contributing to knowledge development related to diversity initiatives. The intern will also support event planning and awareness campaigns that align with the ECA's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of duties including:
  • Supporting inclusive outreach and engagement by identifying networks and organizations that represent persons with disabilities and other underrepresented groups, drafting outreach messages, and maintaining an outreach contact list.
  • Conducting desk research on inclusive recruitment practices and contributing to the development of knowledge products such as fact sheets and case studies.
  • Assisting in compiling recommendations for creating accessible work environments and promoting awareness of disability inclusion within the ECA.
  • Contributing to the planning and organization of outreach events, webinars, and awareness campaigns related to inclusion and diversity.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to have either completed or be currently enrolled in a graduate program or the final year of an undergraduate program. This educational background is essential to ensure that the intern possesses the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the ECA's diversity and outreach initiatives.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in diversity and inclusion issues, as well as a willingness to learn and engage with various stakeholders. Experience in research, outreach, or event planning may be beneficial but is not required.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's ability to contribute to the organization's goals.

Additional Notes:
This internship is expected to last for a duration of six months and is not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. It is important for candidates who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is located to discuss visa requirements prior to accepting the internship offer.
