Job Overview:
The National Media & Communications Consultant position is designed to enhance the visibility and outreach of the UNRCO (United Nations Resident Coordinator Office) in Sri Lanka. The consultant will be responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies that effectively convey the UN's mission and activities in the country. This role requires a deep understanding of media landscapes and the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government officials, civil society, and the media. The consultant will also be expected to produce high-quality content for various platforms, including press releases, social media posts, and reports, ensuring that all communications align with UNDP's branding and messaging guidelines. Furthermore, the consultant will play a crucial role in organizing events and campaigns that promote the UN's initiatives and foster public engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Developing comprehensive communication strategies that align with the UNRCO's objectives and priorities.
  • Creating and disseminating press releases, articles, and other media content to promote UN initiatives.
  • Managing social media accounts and ensuring regular updates that engage the public and stakeholders.
  • Organizing press conferences, media briefings, and public events to enhance the visibility of UN activities.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with journalists, media outlets, and other communication partners.
  • Monitoring media coverage and public sentiment regarding UN activities and providing regular reports to the UNRCO.
  • Collaborating with other UN agencies and partners to ensure cohesive messaging and outreach efforts.
  • Providing training and support to UN staff on communication best practices and media engagement.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in media and communications, with proven experience in developing and implementing communication strategies. A solid understanding of the political and social context in Sri Lanka is essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce high-quality content for diverse audiences. Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms is also required, along with strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with various stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field is required. A master's degree in a relevant discipline would be an advantage. Candidates should have a strong academic background that supports their expertise in media and communications.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in media, communications, or public relations, preferably within an international organization or development context. Experience working with government agencies, NGOs, or media outlets in Sri Lanka is highly desirable. Candidates should also have a track record of successfully managing communication projects and campaigns.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, along with proficiency in either Tamil or Sinhala. Knowledge of additional languages would be considered an asset, enhancing the consultant's ability to engage with diverse communities and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This is a contract position for a duration of 6 months, specifically targeting Sri Lankan individuals. The role is classified as a National Consultant, and only submissions from Sri Lankan nationals will be considered for evaluation. The consultant will work under the UNDP framework and is expected to adhere to the organization's policies and guidelines. The position is full-time, and the consultant will be required to work closely with the UNRCO team to achieve the outlined objectives.
