Job Overview:
The Cultural & Creative Industries Research Consultant position is designed to engage an individual contractor who will conduct research in the cultural and creative sectors. The consultant will be expected to analyze the current landscape of these industries in Ethiopia, identifying key trends, challenges, and opportunities. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of cultural policies, creative economy frameworks, and the socio-economic impact of cultural industries. The consultant will work closely with UNDP to provide insights that will inform policy recommendations and strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the growth and sustainability of the cultural and creative sectors. The position is home-based, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements, but requires adherence to deadlines and deliverables as outlined in the Terms of Reference (ToR).

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Conducting a thorough analysis of the cultural and creative industries in Ethiopia, including mapping existing stakeholders, resources, and initiatives.
  • Identifying key challenges faced by these industries, such as funding gaps, regulatory barriers, and market access issues.
  • Engaging with local stakeholders, including artists, cultural organizations, and government agencies, to gather qualitative data and insights.
  • Developing a comprehensive report that outlines findings, conclusions, and actionable recommendations for policy and program development.
  • Presenting research findings to UNDP and relevant stakeholders, facilitating discussions on potential interventions and support mechanisms.
  • Ensuring that all research activities are conducted in accordance with ethical standards and UNDP guidelines.
  • Submitting all deliverables on time and in the required format as specified in the ToR.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in cultural studies, economics, or a related field. Proven experience in conducting research, particularly in the cultural and creative sectors, is essential. Familiarity with the Ethiopian context and cultural policies is highly desirable. The consultant should demonstrate excellent analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and actionable insights. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are required to effectively engage with stakeholders and present findings. Additionally, proficiency in research methodologies and data analysis tools will be beneficial.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a Master's degree in cultural studies, economics, social sciences, or a related field is required. Candidates with a PhD or equivalent experience in cultural policy or creative industries will be given preference. Relevant certifications or training in research methodologies will also be advantageous.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of professional experience in research, particularly within the cultural and creative sectors. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or government agencies in a consulting capacity is preferred. Demonstrated experience in project management and stakeholder engagement will be considered a strong asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all reports and communications will be conducted in this language. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Ethiopia, such as Amharic, is considered an advantage but not a requirement. Proficiency in other languages relevant to the region may also be beneficial.

Additional Notes:
This position is classified as an International Consultant (IC) role, with a contract duration of 20 working days distributed over 2 months. The consultant will work remotely, allowing for flexibility in scheduling.
