Job Overview: The Protection Team Leader for Legal Aid & Victim Assistance will play a crucial role in overseeing the implementation of DRC's interventions in the Aden, Lahj, and Taiz Governorates. Reporting directly to the Protection Manager and receiving technical guidance from the Protection Specialist, the Team Leader will be responsible for supervising legal aid and victim assistance activities. This includes maintaining effective relationships with stakeholders, ensuring the organization and coordination of legal aid activities, and providing technical support to legal staff. The role requires a proactive approach to capacity building, monitoring, and reporting, ensuring that all activities align with DRC's standard operating procedures and best practices. The Team Leader will also be involved in project planning, financial monitoring, and advocacy efforts to support vulnerable individuals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Protection Team Leader include:
Grants Management: Oversee the implementation of legal activities, ensuring timely spending plans and procurement processes. Support project planning and monitor financial commitments against budgets.
Technical Support and Supervision: Collaborate with the legal team to develop awareness-raising content, conduct legal consultations, and provide technical guidance to legal staff. Ensure compliance with legal standards and DRC SOPs.
Victim Assistance: Implement high-quality protection programs, manage case files, and coordinate with hospitals for victim assistance.
Staff Management: Manage legal and victim assistance staff, participate in recruitment processes, and ensure adherence to HR policies.
Monitoring and Reporting: Submit regular reports on legal activities, track progress, and coordinate with the MEAL team for evaluations.
Coordination and Representation: Build relationships with stakeholders, advocate for vulnerable individuals, and represent DRC in coordination meetings.
Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as directed by the Protection Manager and maintain a positive work environment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of three years of relevant experience in humanitarian response and protection, ideally within an I/NGO or UN agency. Proven leadership qualities and experience managing a team are essential. Familiarity with the needs of persons of concern, including internally displaced persons and refugees, is advantageous. Candidates should have a strong understanding of international protection and human rights legal standards, as well as excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multicultural context. Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills are also required, along with the ability to work independently and under pressure.
Educational Background: A relevant university degree in fields such as Law, Psychology, Social Work, or Medicine is required. A Master's degree in Law is considered a desirable qualification.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant experience in humanitarian response and protection, with a focus on legal aid and victim assistance. Experience in team management and leadership is crucial, along with familiarity with the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic (reading and writing) is mandatory, as well as fluency in English (reading and writing). These language skills are essential for effective communication and reporting in the role.
Additional Notes: The contract length for this position is until April 30, 2027, and it falls within the Management (MG) band. The position is based in Aden, Yemen, and the salary and conditions will adhere to the Danish Refugee Council’s National Terms of Employment.
