Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position within the Communications Unit at UNDP Rwanda offers a unique opportunity for individuals to gain hands-on experience in strategic communications within an international development context. Interns will engage in various activities that include content creation, social media management, campaign design, event communications, and stakeholder engagement. The role is designed to enhance the visibility and outreach of UNDP's work in Rwanda, ensuring effective communication with partners, media, government counterparts, civil society, and the general public. Interns will be involved in developing and implementing communication strategies, managing digital platforms, producing advocacy products, and supporting high-level events. This position is ideal for those looking to build a career in communications, particularly in the realm of international development.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Social Media Management & Content Creation (40%): Drafting, editing, and scheduling posts across UNDP Rwanda's social media platforms (X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), monitoring engagement and trends, and organizing social media calendars to align with global and country-level campaigns.
Communications Campaigns & Knowledge Products (40%): Assisting in planning and executing medium-scale communications campaigns, developing human-interest stories, web articles, newsletters, and other written content, and contributing to visual/multimedia content development, including basic photography, graphics, and short videos.
Administrative & Logistical Support (15%): Supporting event communications, maintaining communications databases, photo libraries, and archives, and providing general administrative support to the Communications Unit, including taking meeting notes and handling procurement requests.
Other (5%): Supporting additional communications-related activities as needed, such as research and partner visibility efforts.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements: currently in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree; currently enrolled in a Master’s degree; or have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a master’s degree or equivalent studies. The field of study should be in Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, International Development, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should possess knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office productivity tools and familiarity with digital and social media platforms. Basic skills in graphic design, video editing, or digital content creation are considered an asset. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to conduct online research and compile information effectively.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes being in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree program, currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program, or having graduated from a master’s degree or equivalent studies within the last year. The preferred fields of study include Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, International Development, or related disciplines. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the principles of effective communication and media engagement in an international development context.
Experience: While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest and motivation to work in an international organization. Good analytical skills in gathering and consolidating data for practical implementation are essential. The ideal candidate will be an outgoing, initiative-taking individual with a goal-oriented mindset, capable of communicating effectively in team settings and independently. Organizational skills to manage various tasks and responsibilities are also important.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position. Knowledge of French and/or Kinyarwanda is considered a strong asset, while familiarity with other UN languages is advantageous. Proficiency in these languages will enhance the intern's ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders and contribute to UNDP's mission in Rwanda.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and all expenses related to the internship will be the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring entity. UNDP does not cover costs arising from accidents, illness, or death during the internship. Interns must secure necessary visas and arrange travel to and from the internship location. They are not eligible to apply for or be appointed to any post in UNDP during the internship period. Proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan is required. Interns are expected to work full-time, although flexibility is allowed for educational commitments. They must also arrange their own financing for subsistence, travel, visa, accommodation, and other related expenses.
