Job Overview:
The position of Radio Operator is crucial for maintaining communication and operational support within the UN's security framework in the Savanes region. The Radio Operator will work under the direction and supervision of the UN advisor" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Advisor and the Field Security Associate. The primary function of this role is to provide operational communication support, track vehicle movements during missions, and ensure the proper functioning of the UN communication systems. This includes managing radio communications, maintaining equipment, and assisting in training and knowledge sharing among staff. The Radio Operator plays a vital role in ensuring that all communication channels are secure and operational, which is essential for the safety of UN personnel in the field. The position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a dynamic work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Radio Operator will be responsible for a variety of technical and administrative tasks. Key duties include:
  • Ensuring effective communication with various UN stations using HF, telephone, smartphone, and email, as well as receiving and sending messages.
  • Tracking the movements of personnel on the ground, particularly vehicle movements during missions.
  • Conducting daily HF radio checks with field offices and performing daily VHF radio checks in Dapaong.
  • Maintaining logs and reporting to the Security Advisor on radio communications.
  • Monitoring the VHF and HF networks to detect unauthorized users.
  • Ensuring the daily operation of the Radio Room for security messages.
  • Collaborating with the supervisor to improve the performance of the inter-agency radio network and Radio Room services.
  • Guiding users of the common telecommunications network and maintaining telecommunications equipment in good working order.
  • Reporting any irregularities in the network and equipment malfunctions. 1
  • Keeping records of various activities conducted in the Radio Room and inventorying common telecommunications equipment. 1
  • Updating directories of phone numbers and radio call signs for UN agencies in Dapaong. 1
  • Centralizing incoming correspondence and submitting it to the security officer. 1
  • Assisting in training and knowledge sharing activities. 1
  • Performing other tasks as deemed necessary for the effective functioning of the office and organization.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires specific qualifications, including:
  • A secondary school diploma is required, or a university degree (Bachelor's) in telecommunications, communication, security, or a related field will be considered but is not mandatory.
  • Knowledge of standard telecommunications equipment (HF, VHF, smartphone) is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in telecommunications and security is required, particularly with a secondary school diploma.
  • Experience working in telecommunications is desirable, especially in using telecom equipment.
  • Familiarity with standard telecommunications equipment is essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications is required.
  • Fluency in French is required, and a good knowledge of English is desirable.
  • Proficiency in the local language is an asset.

Educational Background:
