Job Overview:
The consultant will be responsible for establishing a structured, user-oriented, and accessible knowledge base on chemicals, waste management, and innovative materials specifically in the fashion and construction sectors. This role involves identifying knowledge gaps and priorities, curating existing resources, and developing actionable recommendations to inform program strategy. The consultant will work closely with various stakeholders to ensure that the knowledge base is comprehensive and meets the needs of country-level implementation. The position requires a strong understanding of environmental issues, particularly in relation to chemicals and waste management, and the ability to synthesize complex information into user-friendly formats.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant's duties will include conducting knowledge mapping, research, and analysis to identify existing knowledge platforms and gaps in the areas of chemicals and waste management. They will support the development and management of a knowledge database, curate relevant documents, and provide evidence-based recommendations. The consultant will also engage with stakeholders to validate findings, support training opportunities, and contribute to activities related to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). Additionally, they will provide general program and coordination support, ensuring effective communication with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in a field related to Environment, Material Science, or Engineering. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. The consultant should have at least two years of demonstrated experience in engineering, materials analysis, and project coordination. Strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize technical information are essential, along with experience in knowledge management tools and databases. Familiarity with the fashion and construction sectors in relation to chemicals and waste is highly desirable.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Environment, Material Science, or Engineering is required. A first-level university degree may be accepted if accompanied by additional qualifying experience. This educational background should provide a solid foundation in environmental science and materials management, equipping the candidate with the necessary knowledge to perform the tasks required by the position.

Experience:
The position requires at least two years of relevant experience in topics related to engineering and materials analysis. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to gather and assess technical and policy-related information effectively. Experience in project coordination, resource planning, and strategic thinking is also necessary. Familiarity with knowledge management tools and experience in the fashion and construction sectors regarding chemicals and waste management will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary working language of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French or other United Nations languages is considered an asset, enhancing the consultant's ability to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders and contribute to the organization's multilingual environment.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is home-based and offers a part-time contract for nine months, with a workload of 60% of full-time hours. The monthly compensation is set at USD $3,200, totaling USD $28,800 for the duration of the contract. This position corresponds to Level B in the UN Administrative Instruction for Consultants and Individual Contractors. It is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, ensuring a fair and transparent hiring process.
