Job Overview:
The National Consultant for capacity building will be responsible for strengthening inclusive media narratives and editorial governance in São Tomé and Príncipe. This role involves working closely with local media organizations, government entities, and civil society to enhance the capacity of media professionals and improve the quality of media content. The consultant will be expected to develop training programs, workshops, and resources that promote best practices in journalism and media ethics. The position requires a deep understanding of the local media landscape and the challenges it faces, as well as the ability to foster collaboration among various stakeholders to create a more inclusive media environment. The consultant will also be tasked with assessing the current state of media governance and providing recommendations for improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the National Consultant include but are not limited to: conducting a comprehensive assessment of the current media landscape in São Tomé and Príncipe; developing and implementing training programs for media professionals focusing on inclusive narratives and editorial governance; facilitating workshops and discussions with stakeholders to promote best practices in journalism; providing ongoing support and mentorship to local media organizations; collaborating with government and civil society to enhance media policies and regulations; monitoring and evaluating the impact of capacity-building initiatives; preparing detailed reports and documentation of activities and outcomes; and ensuring that all activities align with UNDP's mission and objectives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in media, journalism, or a related field, with a proven track record of capacity building in media organizations. They should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders. A deep understanding of media governance, ethics, and the challenges faced by local media is essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate experience in developing training materials and conducting workshops, as well as a commitment to promoting inclusive media practices.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in media studies, journalism, communications, or a related field is required. A master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may be considered an asset. Candidates should also have relevant certifications or training in capacity building or media development.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in media development, journalism, or a related field. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in capacity building initiatives, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the media landscape in São Tomé and Príncipe or similar contexts will be considered an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in Portuguese is mandatory, as it is the official language of São Tomé and Príncipe. Proficiency in English is also desirable, as it may facilitate communication with international stakeholders and resources. Knowledge of other local languages would be considered a plus.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 5 months, and it is expected to be a full-time engagement. The consultant will be working under the auspices of UNDP and will be required to submit proposals directly through the UNDP supplier portal. The position may involve collaboration with various stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and media outlets. Compensation and benefits will be aligned with UNDP's policies and guidelines.
