The United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH) was established to provide support primarily to the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), the Haitian National Police (HNP), and the Haitian Armed Forces. Job Overview:
The Communications Officer position is a temporary role based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, reporting to the Assistant Secretary-General for UNSOH or their designate. The incumbent will be responsible for a wide range of communications tasks, including developing and implementing communications strategies, managing media relations, and producing multimedia content. The role requires a proactive approach to communications, focusing on building support, managing crises, and enhancing the organization's reputation. The officer will analyze media trends, draft compelling narratives, and act as a spokesperson when necessary. The position also involves maintaining the UNSOH website and coordinating crisis communications responses, ensuring that the organization's messaging is clear, consistent, and impactful across various platforms.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communications Officer will provide strategic analysis and advice on communications issues, develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy, draft engaging content for various audiences, and foster relationships with media outlets. Responsibilities include creating multimedia products, preparing key messages for media interactions, managing crisis communications, and ensuring the integrity of information shared by UNSOH. The officer will also analyze digital media performance, manage a team, and ensure that all communications activities align with organizational goals and standards. Additional duties include maintaining confidentiality and compliance with UN data privacy and security requirements, as well as performing other related tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, or related fields. They should have at least five years of experience in producing multimedia content across various platforms and managing crisis communications in challenging environments. Experience in a United Nations field operation or similar international media service organization is also required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills, creativity in content development, and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining high standards of professionalism.
Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of communication in international contexts and for effectively engaging with diverse audiences.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience, with a focus on public information and communications. Candidates should have substantial experience in producing multimedia content and managing communications in crisis situations. Experience in a UN context or similar international organizations is crucial, as it provides the necessary understanding of the operational environment and the unique challenges faced in such roles.
Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, proficiency in both languages is required, with a minimum level of proficiency specified in the UN Language Framework. Candidates must demonstrate strong reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in both languages to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders and audiences.
Additional Notes:
This is a temporary position expected to last until June 30, 2026, with the possibility of extension. The selected candidate will be expected to deploy temporarily and may be subject to changes in post level or termination based on funding approvals.
