Job Overview:
The position is located within the AI Governance for Humanity Lab, which is part of an initiative supporting the realization of the vision put forward by the Secretary-General’s High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence. The Lab aims to mobilize multistakeholder networks around agile and networked international AI governance as AI technologies evolve. Its objectives include establishing and catalyzing new norms of information-sharing between key nodes in these networks and supporting informed and impactful AI cooperation at the global level. The intern will contribute to both research and operational workstreams, supporting the Lab's research and programmatic activities under the supervision of senior team members. This role is crucial for the Lab's mission to enhance global cooperation in AI governance and ensure that the benefits of AI technologies are maximized while risks are effectively managed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including conducting desk research on AI governance, digital policy, and emerging technology issues. They will monitor global AI governance trends and regulatory developments across jurisdictions, preparing research briefs, background notes, and analytical summaries for internal use. The intern will also support the planning, coordination, and delivery of events, consultations, and multi-stakeholder dialogues, which includes preparing invitations, agendas, participant lists, briefing notes, and logistical materials. Additionally, they will draft concise summaries, meeting notes, and action trackers from consultations, workshops, and internal meetings. The intern will assist in stakeholder outreach and engagement coordination, maintaining contact lists, tracking participation, and organizing engagement records. General programme, administrative, and operational support will also be part of their responsibilities to ensure the smooth functioning of the Lab. Other duties may be assigned as required.
Required Qualifications:
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree as defined in the previous points. Candidates should preferably be pursuing studies in relevant fields such as Business Administration, Computer Science, Communications, Data Science, Digital Transformation, Economics, International Relations, Information Systems, Law, Machine Learning, Public Policy, Political Science, Public Administration, or related areas. Strong analytical and research skills, organizational and coordination skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to synthesize complex information clearly and concisely are essential. High attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines are also required, along with the capability to work collaboratively in an international environment.
Educational Background:
Candidates interested in this internship should have a strong educational background relevant to the position. This includes being enrolled in a graduate school programme or being in the final year of a university degree programme. Alternatively, candidates who have recently graduated with a university degree are also eligible. The preferred fields of study include but are not limited to Business Administration, Computer Science, Communications, Data Science, Digital Transformation, Economics, International Relations, Information Systems, Law, Machine Learning, Public Policy, Political Science, and Public Administration. It is important that candidates have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards a relevant degree, especially in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages.
Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a certain level of experience, particularly in research and analytical roles. While specific years of experience are not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of AI governance, digital policy, or emerging technologies. Experience in supporting events or stakeholder engagements is also desirable, as it indicates the candidate's ability to coordinate and manage various aspects of programmatic activities effectively. The intern should be able to showcase their skills through previous internships, academic projects, or relevant volunteer work that aligns with the responsibilities of this position.
Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also necessary, as it is the other working language. UNODET serves as an advocate and focal point for digital cooperation, engaging with Member States, the technology industry, civil society, and other stakeholders. It facilitates multi-stakeholder policy dialogue on digital and emerging technologies and strengthens system-wide coordination within and across the United Nations system. The office supports the follow-up and implementation of the Global Digital Compact, working closely with various UN entities and multi-stakeholder groups to accelerate global digital cooperation and mitigate risks associated with technology. UNODET also carries out other related duties assigned by the Secretary-General, including follow-up actions from the Secretary-General's Roadmap for Digital Cooperation and the report "Our Common Agenda."
