Job Overview: As an Electromechanical engineer" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Technical Engineer at CERN, you will play a crucial role in the major upgrades of the CMS experiment. This position involves leading modification and consolidation work on the infrastructure and electrical services for the CMS detector, which includes both underground and surface areas of the experimental site. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of activities, from dismantling and decommissioning existing systems to the reinstallation of electronic racks, electrical distribution systems, cooling piping, and power and signal cables. You will also be involved in building renovations. In addition to these technical tasks, you will have a coordination role within the CMS technical coordination team, where you will define project needs and resources, place orders, and supervise the work performed by technical service teams and subcontractors. This position requires a proactive approach to managing infrastructure projects, ensuring that all activities are executed safely and efficiently while adhering to project timelines and quality standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise and follow up on the decommissioning and subsequent reinstallation of electronics and power racks in the underground area, coordinating different teams involved in the process.
Manage infrastructure projects deployed progressively, including the installation of essential services such as power distribution, HVAC systems, and building renovations.
Take responsibility for the coordination and validation of infrastructure works in both the underground and surface experimental areas of the CMS experiment.
Organize the required technical support from central technical teams for each work package you lead, ensuring that all necessary resources are available.
Prepare and maintain field operation planning to ensure smooth execution of tasks.
Perform day-to-day follow-up of site activities carried out by technical support teams and subcontractors, monitoring progress and addressing any issues that arise.
Report work progress to CMS experiment management and adjust plans and resources as required to meet project goals.
Support projects with logistical and operational assistance, ensuring that all aspects of the project are well-coordinated.
Act as the territorial safety officer for underground and/or surface buildings, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and protocols.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electromechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Additionally, candidates should have solid experience in supervising and following up on technical work that integrates multiple disciplines, including construction, mechanical, electrical, and cooling systems. Proven ability to organize teamwork and coordinate on-site technical activities is essential. Successful experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams is required, along with proficiency in ensuring safety in the workplace. Candidates should also have experience in the installation and handling of equipment, as well as solid knowledge in project management, including drafting technical specifications, placing orders, managing contracts, and monitoring quality and progress. Familiarity with project planning tools and related software is necessary, and the ability to read 2D and 3D designs is advantageous. Experience in radio-protection and work in classified areas, as well as in the installation and verification of scaffolding and the use of mobile elevating work platforms, would be a plus.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in Electromechanical Engineering or a closely related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. Candidates should have a strong foundation in engineering principles, particularly those related to electromechanical systems and project management.
Experience: Candidates should have solid experience in supervising and coordinating technical work across multiple disciplines, particularly in environments that require integration of construction, mechanical, electrical, and cooling systems. Experience in managing infrastructure projects and ensuring safety compliance in the workplace is essential. Familiarity with project management practices, including drafting specifications and managing contracts, is also required. Experience in multidisciplinary team settings and the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with various stakeholders is crucial for success in this role.
Languages: Proficiency in both spoken and written English and French is mandatory for this position. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages, as they will be required to document procedures, decisions, and technical specifications in both languages. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not mandatory.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. Candidates should be prepared for work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is required, and candidates may be required to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed by the organization. Shift work may also be required. The selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed due to the occupational health risks associated with this position.
