Job Overview: The External Relations Officer (Private Sector) will play a crucial role in the Donor and External Relations Section of the OHCHR. This position is focused on enhancing the organization's fundraising efforts through private sector engagement. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to secure funding from private donors, ensuring that the OHCHR maintains a consistent and coherent approach to private sector fundraising. This role involves advising various divisions and branches on fundraising policies, preparing written outputs for senior management, and maintaining updated donor profiles. The officer will also be tasked with creating fundraising tools and materials, ensuring compliance with UN rules and procedures, and managing relationships with assigned private sector donors. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying new funding opportunities and developing strategic partnerships to broaden the donor base for the OHCHR.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the External Relations Officer (Private Sector) include:
Advising Divisions/Branches and field offices on fundraising policies and strategies related to the private sector.
Keeping donor profiles updated and preparing various written outputs such as briefing notes and strategic papers.
Drafting correspondence for donors and preparing funding statistical tables.
Collaborating with colleagues to create fundraising tools and information materials.
Ensuring compliance with UN rules and procedures in fundraising activities.
Serving as a focal point for assigned private sector donors, maintaining frequent contact and promoting cooperation agreements.
Participating in negotiations of contributions and funding arrangements.
Coordinating follow-up on reporting obligations and providing updates on the implementation of the Private Sector Resource Mobilization Strategy.
Developing strategic partnerships with new private donors and prospects. 1
Organizing donor briefings and contributing to effective communications and outreach strategies.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of external and donor relations, particularly with the private sector donor community. They should have a solid understanding of programme management and international affairs, especially concerning human rights and humanitarian issues. The ability to analyze and resolve issues, conduct independent research, and manage conflicting priorities is essential. Outstanding drafting skills in English are required, along with a commitment to gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in social and political science, economics, international relations, or related fields is preferred. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with at least two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in resource mobilization, partnership building, and/or management is required. Additionally, at least three years of specific fundraising experience with non-traditional donors, such as foundations and private sector entities, is necessary. Experience working within the United Nations or similar international organizations is desirable, as is experience in result-based management.
Languages: English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, and proficiency in French is considered an asset.
Additional Notes: This position is temporarily available for a minimum of three months, with the possibility of extension subject to the availability of funds. The role is classified at the Professional level, and candidates may be considered for temporary assignments.
