Job Overview:
The National Individual Consultant for Social and Environmental Standards (SES) Expert under Long Term Agreement is a critical role within the UNDP framework. This position is designed to ensure that social and environmental standards are integrated into project planning and implementation processes. The consultant will be responsible for providing expert advice and guidance on SES compliance, conducting assessments, and developing strategies to mitigate potential social and environmental risks. The role requires a deep understanding of local contexts and the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and community groups. The consultant will work closely with UNDP teams to enhance the effectiveness of projects and ensure alignment with national and international standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide expert advice on social and environmental standards to UNDP project teams and stakeholders.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of projects to identify potential social and environmental impacts.
  • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified risks and enhance positive outcomes.
  • Facilitate stakeholder consultations and engage with local communities to gather input and feedback.
  • Prepare detailed reports and documentation on SES compliance and recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate with other consultants and experts to ensure a holistic approach to project implementation.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of SES strategies and make necessary adjustments.
  • Stay updated on national and international SES regulations and best practices.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven expertise in social and environmental standards, particularly in the context of development projects.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess complex social and environmental issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with UNDP policies and procedures related to social and environmental safeguards.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Development Studies, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in social and environmental standards or related areas will be an advantage.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in social and environmental assessments, particularly in the context of international development projects. Experience working with UN agencies or similar organizations is highly desirable. Proven track record of successfully implementing SES frameworks and engaging with stakeholders at various levels is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in Nepali or other local languages is considered an asset, as it will facilitate better communication with local communities and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is from May 2026 to April 202
  • This is a full-time position, and the consultant will be expected to work closely with UNDP teams and stakeholders throughout the assignment. The role may involve travel within Nepal to engage with project sites and stakeholders. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and in line with UNDP standards.
